If dejection itself is excitement, because they are different, it is forbidden to cultivate the limbs of enlightenment that correspond to it. Therefore, it is not permissible to teach the cultivation of the limbs of enlightenment as its antidote. Since everything is one in the mind, everything that corresponds to it and does not correspond to it must either be completely forbidden or completely established. Therefore, it should be understood that the sutra's statement that "only a dejected mind is excitement" is not meant to be understood in this way. The reason why right mindfulness, a limb of enlightenment, is not mentioned is because it is all-pervasive. For the sutra says, "I say that mindfulness is all-pervasive." If only those limbs of enlightenment that are completely in harmony are cultivated, the question arises: Are these limbs of enlightenment to be cultivated separately? The meaning is that they are to be obtained separately. When a limb of enlightenment is obtained or manifested, the others will also follow. How does the sutra say that they are to be cultivated separately? Therefore, it is said that this is the cultivation of attention, and that attention itself is not mutually contradictory. By cultivating attention, the limbs of enlightenment will become free from sinking and excitement. Then, afflictions will disappear, and later, the entire collection of limbs of enlightenment will manifest. In this, the term "excessive laziness" appears extensively. If the mind becomes dejected, it will be explained in detail. Here, even though it is excitement, it is said that the mind is not dejected because of excessive laziness, and even though it is laziness itself, it is said that there is remorse in the mind because of excessive excitement, so there is no contradiction. If someone says that there is a contradiction in this: if the mind itself is both dejected and excited, then when is the mind dejected, etc., there is no contradiction in this. Because the two are not simultaneous. Laziness and excitement are the basis of many afflictions, so they arise simultaneously. The teacher said: The words of a thoughtful person are inviolable, but I say that this is not the intention here. Because of excessive laziness, there is dejection, and because of excessive excitement... For what reason, what

Because it is extensively stated in the sutra as, "At that time, the mind is timid." Then, how should one understand the statement that "all minds possessing desire are co-arisen with desire"? In this regard, a mind that is in accordance with desire, both are co-arisen with desire. Other than that, a mind with outflows is co-arisen with corresponding desire, because it is said so in the sutra. Then, will a mind without outflows also become co-arisen with desire? There are two situations, namely, those of learners and non-learners. Precisely because of this, it is said "learners." Learners, on the path of seeing and the path of cultivation, undoubtedly exist simultaneously with the attainment of desire, because desire has not yet been abandoned. If it is considered that this is the object of desire, then, it means that if it is considered that any mind that is the object of desire possesses desire, then, as it is extensively stated in the sutra, the mind with outflows of an Arhat is also like that, because that is also the object of desire in the continuum of others. Or, if the worldly mind of an Arhat is not the object of desire, then how can it be with outflows? It means that if it is considered that it is with outflows because it is the object of universal afflictions, namely, views, doubt, ignorance, etc., even then, due to the knowledge of others' minds, it will be held as possessing delusion, which will lead to the mind with outflows of an Arhat becoming the object of delusion. Because delusion is also a universal affliction, the mind with outflows of an Arhat is the object of others' delusion. The knowledge of others' minds is also not with attainment as its object, because it is with mind and mental factors as its object, and it also does not possess attainment. Then, regarding the phrase "the desire that is the object of that mind is also not the object of the object," here, the word "that" is related to the mind of others. Whatever desire, the mind is directed towards it, that is directed towards that mind. Wherever there is desire directed towards the mind, then there it is directed towards the desire directed towards that mind. Also, why here, merely taking attainment as the object, will it not lead to grasping desire?
