The reason for saying "it will perish" is because I have no substance. The reason for saying "inverted clinging" is because of clinging to the suffering of the body as self. If asked, what are the afflictions that are not like this? Answer: Afflictions such as desire, which are abandoned through cultivation, are also inverted clinging because they cling to impure things as pure, pleasurable, and permanent. The agent is the agent of virtuous and non-virtuous actions. The feeler is the outflow of the fruit. The controller is because one can do as one pleases with it. The reason for saying "abiding in its place" is extensively explained, because of clinging to things that appear as self as permanent and impermanent. Similarly, it should be said of others as well. Desire, anger, and pride are extensively explained. Desire is the state of clinging without embellishment to one's own nature, such as form, so it is said to have a basis. The same should be said of hatred and so on. The teacher also mentioned "noble ones." The so-called "loss of mindfulness" is defiled mindfulness. The so-called "illusion of a snake on a rope" is like, due to loss of mindfulness, one may have the illusion of a snake on a rope, rather than arising from definite knowledge. The reason for "for uncertain knowledge" is because views enter into the state of definite knowledge. The saying "even from an Arhat, there is no complete falling away" means not only that there is no complete falling away from abandoning what is to be abandoned by the path of seeing, but it is thought in this way. If asked, how should this be understood? Answer: Monks, whatever is abandoned by the wisdom of the noble ones, that is abandoned, it is said. It will be shown that what is not abandoned by the wisdom of the noble ones, even if abandoned, is not abandoned, it is thought in this way, because it will be reborn. An Arhat himself is not included by the worldly path, because the worldly path has no antidote to the peak of existence. To the cautious learner, it is said, "one should be cautious." This statement of the sutra is about the Arhat himself not completely falling away.

This is the second source called "is." It is possible for a trainee to fall away from the two fruits, and their defilements are still remaining, so it is said to be cautious. Since the non-trainee has abandoned all defilements, it is impossible to fall away from the Arhat fruit, so it is not said to be cautious towards them. If it were not so, why not say, "They should also be cautious like the trainees"? Others say that of those abandoned by the worldly path, the abandonment of the eighth ground is still related to the evil destinies. The example of this is like the son of a coppersmith who indulges in lust. Moreover, those abandoned by the uncontaminated are not like that, because even if they fall away from the Arhat fruit, they will not be related to rebirth again. Therefore, the Buddha said, monks, whatever is abandoned by noble wisdom is truly abandoned. It is said to be cautious towards the trainee, because the Arhat path is necessary. Even if the trainee is free from desire from the realm of nothingness, if he falls away, he will be born in the realm of form, therefore the Blessed One taught to be cautious towards them. For the non-trainee, even if he falls away, there is no opportunity to manifest samsara again, so it is not said to be cautious towards them. They say so. This is contrary to the reasoning that will be explained, and because there is doubt, it is not accepted. The trainee will fall away, because they are abandoned by the worldly path, and not abandoned by the transcendental path. In other sutras it is also said to be cautious towards the Arhat, in order to eliminate the idea that gain and respect will cause obstacles, so it is extensively said, "Ananda, even towards the Arhat." Gain and respect will only cause obstacles to dwelling happily in the present dharma, but not to the Arhat himself, so there is no need to be cautious towards them. This explains in detail "the mind liberation is unshakable." In that sutra, it is said in its own language that it is impossible to fall away from the Arhat fruit. If there is time and opportunity...
