The arising of knowledge is what is called a trainee and an Arhat. A person who has not yet generated knowledge is called a trainee. Therefore, the seven types of individuals previously mentioned are established as trainees. That is, they are the four stream-enterers and those abiding in the three fruits. The training that is primarily concerned with discipline is higher discipline. It is the same between higher mind and higher wisdom. Ordinary beings also become trainees, but they are not learning in discipline, concentration, and wisdom, because they do not know the truth as it is. Therefore, they are called ordinary beings, and this should be understood in context. Having explained the training in higher discipline and higher mind, what is the training in higher wisdom? It is knowing as it is, "This is suffering, the noble truth," and so on, up to "This is the path leading to the cessation of suffering, the noble truth." Because ordinary beings do not have the complete knowledge of the unconditioned as it is, they also do not have unconditioned discipline and concentration. Therefore, since all trainings are unconditioned, they are not the training of trainees. Furthermore, it is said that in order to abandon training, first, one abandons the training in higher discipline, which is to abandon the Pratimoksha vows. For the training in higher mind, one also abandons training, which is to completely fall away from the concentration of the heat stage, and so on. For the training in higher wisdom, one also abandons training, which is to completely fall away from the wisdom included in the heat stage. Do Arhats and trainees not completely fall away? Although they do completely fall away, they do not die because of completely falling away, nor do they do what should not be done. A trainee who has completely fallen away still has the three trainings: higher discipline, higher mind, and higher wisdom. This is because they do not fall away from the first fruit. Ordinary beings are the roots of virtue...

The three trainings are not fully present where everything is cut off. The so-called "noble one abiding in nature" means abiding in unindicated conduct. The nature of sentient beings refers to the state of not being equally established. Mind is thinking. The so-called "like walking on the road" means that because the thought of walking is not abandoned, even if one eats food etc. after entering the road, not walking is also called walking on the road. The so-called "because of attainment and accordance" means that even if one abides in nature, because of attainment and accordance with the three trainings, it is called training. Why is Nirvana not a training? Because whatever attainment of the path of training there is, non-learners and ordinary beings also possess it, so it is explained extensively. Ordinary beings on the worldly path give rise to the loss of Nirvana. The transcendental path is for the noble ones. The so-called "non-learners and ordinary beings also possess it" negates that non-discriminating cessation is learning. Similarly, the so-called "learners and ordinary beings also possess it" is non-learning. The so-called "first entrant" refers to entering the fruit of stream-enterer. This is only entering, not abiding in the fruit. The so-called "abiding in the four fruits" refers to the period from abiding in the fruit of stream-enterer to abiding in the fruit of Arhatship. The so-called "remaining entrants" refers to those who enter the once-returner, the non-returner, and the fruit of Arhatship. The so-called "because there is no difference from the three fruits" means how? For the time being, whoever enters in order to manifest the fruit of once-returner is no different from the stream-enterer. So what is it? It is the stream-enterer. Similarly, the three who enter the non-returner and the Arhat are no different from the once-returner and the non-returner. Thus, those who enter the fruit are no different from abiding in the three fruits.

Here, it is because of gradual attainment, that is, when one attains the once-returner fruit following the stream-enterer fruit, and then attains the non-returner fruit. Generally, detachment from desire through the mundane path, where six types are abandoned from the objects of desire, and the exhaustion of nine types of detachment from desire, is only for those who have entered the path of seeing, not for those who have entered the stream-enterer fruit. In that case, there are four or three types of individuals, not five. To be detached from desire from the peak of existence by the supramundane, it is called, that is because it is the antidote to its own higher ground. Because there is no mundane path above that, the mundane path included by the higher ground is the antidote to the higher ground, and there is no ground above the peak of existence. Because its afflictions increase, this is because the afflictions of one's own ground increase in the same way as the object. Which afflictions increase? Whichever affliction increases on whichever object, that object is not what is abandoned by that object, like the afflictions of one's own ground in the desire realm, because it is in accordance with arising. Whatever is the antidote to something, afflictions will not increase on that, because that is the cause of its decrease. For example, the afflictions of the lower ground do not increase on the higher ground. So, why is the mundane path of the lower ground not the antidote to the higher ground? Because it is in accordance with the arising of afflictions, afflictions will increase in that form, and this is not an object that completely refutes the above. The lower ground cannot refute, therefore it cannot be detached from desire for the higher ground, because the higher ground is very excellent. Therefore, only the supramundane path can reasonably be detached from desire from the peak of existence. Other than the peak of existence is called the eight grounds. Also by the mundane path, this is because in all respects, there is the approaching path of the higher ground.
