It is for this reason. Therefore, it is extensively stated in the sutras as "these." If there are nine types of non-returners because of the difference in afflictions and faculties, that is what is being said. Then, the sutra extensively speaks of "noble persons," etc., which comes from that sutra where it says: "Monks, I will also teach the seven courses of noble persons without approximation, who are completely liberated from suffering." What are the seven? They are the three who are completely liberated from suffering in the intermediate state, the three who are completely liberated from suffering after birth, and the upward-goers. Therefore, it is extensively mentioned that the upward-goers are not distinguished. Furthermore, why are the two types of non-returners distinguished and taught, while the third is not distinguished? Because the first two can understand only these differences. Although afflictions and faculties differ, the first are those who are being born, and the second are those who have already been born. The upward-goers are those who are being born, that is, many who have not been born, also because of meditating on cultivating and not cultivating meditative absorption, and in the process of meditating on cultivating meditative absorption, some touch one realm and others touch two realms. There, there are also differences such as touching one realm and leaping in three ways. Among them, those called half-leapers are of many kinds. Because the distinctions of the upward-goers are very numerous and extensive. Except for those who are completely liberated from suffering in the intermediate state and after birth, the six types of non-returners are said to be the courses of noble persons. Also, because some of their differences exist elsewhere, the third is common, only the differences of the upward-goers are distinctly established. Others also include "noble or ignoble, entering or not entering," etc., because these do not return, therefore they are praised as good persons, thus showing that they are the courses of noble persons. Because of the uncommon power of the strength of detachment from desire, the non-returners are called noble persons. If it is said that the courses of other learners are not, then stream-enterers and once-returners are not meant. Birth, course, and future life are synonyms. As has been said, these

"Without" refers to the absence in Stream-enterers and Once-returners. Because these two do not commit acts such as killing, and engage in non-celibate conduct, etc., therefore, regarding the practice of virtuous and non-virtuous actions, and coming from the realm of gods to the realm of humans, therefore, for these, the noble individual without designation does not exist. Precisely because of this, it is said "also for others," that is, for Stream-enterers and Once-returners. "The five sins" refers to: the five sins are killing, taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, lying, and drinking alcohol. "Mostly" refers to having abandoned all that is to be abandoned by seeing, and having abandoned some of what is to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm. "For whom is there no designation" refers to, unlike Stream-enterers and Once-returners, not being of another kind, then what is it? Because they have obtained the discipline of never committing all sins, and have abandoned all that is to be abandoned by seeing in the three realms, and also the nine categories of what is to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm, therefore, they are noble individuals without designation. This sutra is about Non-returners, not about other learners. "Why do Non-returners who have exhausted their lifespan also have this distinction?" refers to things like attaining complete Nirvana in the intermediate state. "Non-returner who has exhausted his lifespan" refers to someone who, in the first life, obtained the fruit of Stream-enterer or Once-returner, and in the second life obtained Non-returner, which is in the desire realm without fault, and is not wearied by the suffering of existence, and attains complete Nirvana there. "If I decline at the end" refers to, the end refers to the end of becoming a human, that is, the end of life. Decline refers to not having obtained Arhatship. Therefore, are this sutra and that sutra, "The noble one who has exhausted his lifespan in the desire realm, does not go to another realm," contradictory? The Vaibhashikas say:
