The term "upward transference" should be understood as applicable to all places from the highest Akanistha to the peak of existence. This shows that it does not contradict reason. The phrase "because there is no going further" avoids contradiction with the scriptures. The phrase "for example" is an example of this itself. For the time being, these are the five non-returners who approach the form realm, from complete nirvana in the intermediate state to upward transference. Those who go to the formless realm are four, excluding nirvana in the intermediate state. Those in the formless realm do not have an intermediate state, so there is no nirvana in the intermediate state. Therefore, the distinction of complete nirvana after birth, etc., is mentioned. The phrase "having died and transmigrated from here" refers to the desire realm. The phrase "these are the six non-returners" refers to the five previously mentioned in the form realm, and the sixth is approaching the formless realm. The phrase "with three examples" refers to small morning fires, etc. For example, a small morning fire will die out as it manifests and is accomplished. For example, the sparks from a blacksmith's anvil or plow iron, blazing with fire, intensely heated, and struck with iron hammers, will die out as they fly upwards. For example, that same hot iron spark, having flown upwards, will die out before it falls to the ground. Alternatively, all three of these, namely, those in the intermediate state, those who attain complete nirvana after birth, and those who transfer upwards, because each has fast and not fast, and complete nirvana after a long time, will become nine non-returners. The phrase "three non-returners" refers to by which distinctions the nine non-returners are explained. The phrase "these nine" refers to the collection of these distinctions as described above. Because they have accumulated the karma to manifest accomplishment and experience the result, they attain complete nirvana in the intermediate state, because it is not other than complete nirvana only in the intermediate state. Because they have accumulated the karma to experience the result after birth, they attain complete

For whom does one enter nirvana? It is because of accumulating karma to be experienced in other instances that one transmigrates upwards, because from then on, it is related to other births. The so-called "sequence" is combined with the distinctions of afflictions and faculties. Precisely because of this, the so-called "those respective ones" refers to the three kinds of distinctions of each of the three non-returners. Precisely because of this, what are the respective distinctions in terms of karma, afflictions, and the distinctions of faculties? Because they become nine kinds of non-returners, it is again said here, "in whatever way"; therefore, the first two sets of three are spoken of in this way. The set of three who attain nirvana in the intermediate state and the set of three who attain nirvana after being born are distinguished from the perspective of the mutual relationship between afflictions and faculties, but not from the distinction of karma. Among these, those who attain nirvana in the intermediate state, because there is no different karma that will experience manifest accomplishment. Similarly, for those who attain nirvana after being born, one should also speak of karma and afflictions. Among them, considering the distinctions and nature of afflictions, the three who attain nirvana in the intermediate state are those with small, medium, and great afflictions, therefore the distinctions of faculties are also sharp, medium, and dull. Those who attain nirvana after being born are also similar to this; one should speak of the differences in afflictions and faculties considering their respective categories. The last set of three is explained in detail, among the three upward transmigrations, transmigration is considering one's own category, with small afflictions and sharp faculties. Leaping halfway is with medium afflictions and medium faculties. Dying and transmigrating in all places is with great afflictions and dull faculties. Because the karma experienced in other instances also makes a distinction, because karma will experience one, many, and many dharmas of birth. From the distinction of karma, this is also a distinction, and also from the distinction of afflictions and faculties, this is from the word "also." Here, just as there are nine situations because afflictions and faculties are different, it is impossible to have nine different karmas, because the first two sets of three have no distinction of karma.
