Or, in the state of the noble ones, the afflictions to be abandoned through meditation, having abandoned three parts, are established as being born from one class to another in three lifetimes. Having abandoned four parts of afflictions, it is established as being in two lifetimes. Here, it should be applied appropriately. From birth, the reason why two or three lifetimes remain is because, for the state of ordinary beings, they have done and accumulated karma that will experience two or three existences. The noble ones turn away from samsara and face nirvana, so it is not reasonable to be reborn. If it is said, "Does the stream-enterer later abandon afflictions?", this refers to the afflictions to be abandoned through meditation. For those who have abandoned three or four parts, without obtaining the antidote of the faculty, those afflictions cannot be abandoned. Merely mentioning the abandonment of afflictions explains that the antidote of the faculty has been obtained. Therefore, it is not mentioned in the verses. If that is the case, then one should not mention two lifetimes and two or three lifetimes, because that is also explained by merely abandoning afflictions. If someone asks: "Whoever has abandoned three or four parts of afflictions, it is certain that they will realize that two or three births remain," then, therefore, it is said, "Even if it becomes very little," which refers to attaining nirvana in this life, the intermediate state, or after birth. The reason for mentioning the cause for very few births is because they do not possess the higher state, that is, because the stream-enterer possesses the state from the fruit of once-returner up to the arhat. Therefore, in order to ascertain "from one class to another in two or three lifetimes," their birth is mentioned, because it is not desired that they are born from one class to another because any one cause is incomplete. If one possesses three causes, one will certainly be born from one class to another, then, since the three and four parts of afflictions have already been mentioned, will those who abide on the path of seeing also be born from one class to another? No, because the path of seeing is not the antidote to the three and four parts of afflictions to be abandoned through meditation, because there the antidote of the undefiled faculty is not obtained. Therefore, abiding on the path of seeing
