We are to abandon afflictions without reversing them and to recognize them there. Whatever is contemplated with one's own characteristics, such as hair and body hair on the body, does not abandon afflictions, because it is abandoned by contemplating in a common way. This is the application of mindfulness of the body, but not the actual mindfulness of the body. To contemplate the arising of suffering and the forbearance and knowledge of arising, which are in accordance with the faculties of pleasure, mental pleasure, and equanimity. As for being familiar and unfamiliar, familiar means obtained through detachment from desire. Unfamiliar means arising from application. What is obtained through detachment from desire is also manifested through the means of application. The characteristics of impurity, with detailed distinctions, have been explained. Regarding breathing in and out, the extensive explanation is as follows: Breathing in means leading inward, that is, which limb enters. Breathing out means releasing outward, that is, which limb releases. Others say this. It is said like this: Monks, breathing in means that the winds enter like inhaling or drinking. Monks, breathing out means that the winds manifestly scatter outward, manifestly release, manifestly flow out. Others say that impermanence and non-impermanence are the meanings of breathing in and out. Entering by increasing its power means entering there by increasing the power of mindfulness, to be known for entering there. Because it is the nature of wisdom, it is said to be mindfulness, because from here the winds enter, and from here the winds exit, therefore, mindfulness is made the master there, because increasing the power of mindfulness, it is increasing the power of mindfulness. Others say that it is the wisdom that focuses on that. Just as phenomena are held together by wisdom, similarly, it and its retinue, like impurity, are the nature of the five aggregates and the four aggregates. In the three proximities, it means in meditative concentration.

They exist in the access concentrations of the first, second, and third dhyanas. They do not exist in the access concentration of the fourth dhyana because there is no exhalation or inhalation. Why are they not considered the actual practice of dhyana? Because they are associated with equanimity. Entering the mind that operates in the desire realm, this closely represents them in such a way that those born in the desire realm and the mind of the first dhyana ground will manifest. The so-called body that operates in the desire realm refers to the inhalation and exhalation that operate in the desire realm. In the actual practice of dhyana samadhi, there is no equanimity. Why are they not associated with other feelings? Because they are associated with conceptual thought, which is explained extensively, and its antidote is the antidote to conceptual thought. Not being associated with them refers to pleasure and pain. If that is the case, then would the joy of the second dhyana and the pleasure of the third dhyana also be associated? Therefore, it is said that pleasure and joy also obstruct equanimity, meaning they are enemies of patience. Focusing, creating, and valuing are different names because they are obtained by focusing on the mindfulness of inhalation and exhalation. They should also not be associated with pleasure and joy. The so-called people of this Dharma school refer to those who follow the Sugata. They belong to this Dharma school, not to outsiders, because they contradict self-grasping and are profound. Because they cannot directly realize the profound Dharma of their own tradition, the so-called profoundness is because it possesses six reasons. Those without transmission do not even know how to count, let alone follow, so what need is there to say more? The so-called eighth from their perspective refers to adding the third dhyana. The so-called focusing on wind is because it focuses on inhalation and exhalation. The so-called having a desire realm basis is because there would be no realization in that way. Arising from effort refers to obtaining effort, and what is obtained through detachment from desire is detachment from desire.

It is obtained through effort. Even for those who are free from desire, it is possible to manifest through the path of effort. Therefore, on the ground where desire has not been abandoned, these preliminaries are not without reason. Since attachment to friends, family, and so on leads to greater diligence, only a mind free from effort is suitable as an antidote to conceptualization. "Keeping the body and mind at ease" means not deliberately gathering the body and mind, that is, relaxing the body and relaxing the mind. Others say, "Relaxing and tightening effort leads to distraction, so there are three faults." Relaxing effort leads to laziness, drowsiness, and falling asleep. The mind becomes distracted outwardly. Conversely, tightening effort leads to physical and mental fatigue, and mental distraction leads to being overwhelmed by afflictions. One should count what enters first, and then count what comes out later. For birth, it enters first; for death, it comes out later. Thus, by understanding birth and death, one becomes familiar with impermanence. "The circle of wind" refers to the downward-moving wind. "Between the scattering winds" refers to the upward-moving wind. Because one must attend to reality as it is, such faith and attention is attention itself, not attending to reality as it is. Because breathing cannot continuously exist in a place. Others say, "By attending to other things with faith, it follows accordingly." In order to truly accomplish attending to reality as it is, it is impossible for rising to occur. Regarding "from the cause of the thought of its effort," does breathing belong to the body or the mind? Because its cause is a part of the body. The body ranges from the desire realm to the third dhyana. Because there is no breathing in higher realms, there is no breathing for those in the formless realm and wriggling creatures.
