As for the twelve places, how should they be understood? They should be understood as both internal and external, because this is how other external places can be explained. Merely pointing out the number does not allow one to understand the difference, therefore the question is asked, "Which twelve places?" In order to distinguish the objects of focus, it is said, "Except for forms, etc." Because they are dominated by the self, they are internal places; the internal is indeed internal. If there is no self, how can there be internal or external? Just as without discipline, there will be no superior discipline. One might ask: The mind is the basis of clinging to self, so it is widely said that all those who speak of a self call the basis of clinging to self the self. Just as one thinks of one's own qualities or one's own objects, attachment also arises. Clinging to self also depends on the mind, because there is no self apart from the mind. Because here the pride of self is established, only the mind is the self, and because it arises from the mind and depends on the mind, only the mind is clung to as the self. Here it is said that the mind is clung to as the self, how should this be understood? Therefore it is said: The wise tame themselves. This is widely quoted. This also refers to other scriptures, and is the basis for understanding that meaning, but it is not independent. To illustrate this, the Blessed One widely said "From others," from which it is said: Taming the mind brings happiness. Here, taming the mind is mentioned. Therefore, it should be known that here the word "self" clearly refers to the mind. Those who are good at taming themselves, the wise, will attain a good rebirth. And so on. Because it is close to the object of reliance, it is said that for the eyes, etc., what is not the object of forms, etc.? If the mind is not the object of reliance that abides in the object, then what difference would there be? If there is any difference, the mind will change according to their changes, and because of following their changes, although consciousness does not abide in the object, it only appears in the eyes, etc., and not in forms, etc. For example, the feeling of pleasure, pain, and equanimity is completely limited to the object of the body.

It is not in the direction of objects such as form. Therefore, although there is no difference in the cause of generating consciousness between eyes and forms, etc., due to this difference, they are accomplished as the basis and as the object. Therefore, it is also the nature of inner and outer. Here, what is the cause of mind and mental factors in things like one birth and one dwelling, and one cessation and one result? The venerable Sangha says: Mind is called inner, and mental factors are called outer. Since form and so on are the nature of the object, the distant nature is the outer cause. Since the eyes and so on are the nature of the basis of mind and mental factors, is it not said to be the near nature and the inner nature? In the continuum of such teachings, the questioner seems to only want to complete the scriptures. What is said, mental factors, are only Sūtra-like, because they are close to the inner nature and the basis of mind. This also seems irrelevant. Why do you consider benefit to be inner and outer by means of near and far nature? Eyes and so on should be called near and inner because of the nature of benefiting by uncommon objects of support. Forms and so on are far and outer because of the nature of benefiting by the nature of the object, and thus are widely explained. Furthermore, since any mind is the basis of any ego-grasping, everything is inner. Since it is the basis of ego-grasping, it cannot be established as mind. Because the object of self is ego-grasping, it is very famous among those who speak of self, therefore it is said so. Since the object of self is also the basis of ego-grasping, it is attributed to the mind as self, therefore it is established as inner and outer. Furthermore, since it is the basis of desire and so on, everything is in accordance with afflictions, because there is no cause of difference. Because it is the basis of ego-grasping, it is attributed to the mind as self, but it does not become self, because its nature is different. There is no contradiction in grasping self in others. Like a lotus, since it is the basis of desire and so on, that mind only becomes the nature of affliction.
