Since there is no author and no holder, it is thought that it is impossible for the eyes, etc., to be grasped. Therefore, the question is, "What is the meaning of 'grasp'?" In the scriptures, it says, "Belonging to my body." What is that? It is what is held by the mind and mental factors. What is called "held" is what the mind and mental factors closely grasp as the object of support. It is difficult to believe that the mind and mental factors, which are not form and do not abide in the object, can grasp the object of support. Therefore, they are closely grasped in order to harmonize with each other for benefit and harm, but not in order to abide in it. For example, if beneficial things such as eye medicine are applied to the eyes, etc., clear and unconfused consciousness will arise, and if harm is done by wind, etc., unclear and confused consciousness will arise. Similarly, if consciousness corresponding to pleasant and painful feelings arises, the eyes, etc., will increase and decrease, so that they can harmonize with each other. In order to avoid the fault of the mind and mental factors becoming the grasped of the eyes, etc., it is said, "What is called sentient being in the world." What is called "sentient being in the world"? It is that which, when harm is done to the object of support, will cause suffering, and which protects it from harm from grass, kusha grass, fire, thorns, and lightning, etc., and which undergoes changes such as desire, anger, sorrow, fear, and joy. The mind and mental factors are the holders, so they are not called the grasped. The Vaibhashikas think that any form that is tormented or cut will cause suffering, and the opposite will cause happiness, and that is the grasped. Others say that this thing that belongs to the body is completely grasped with the pride of "I" and "mine," and that is the grasped. But that is not the case, because the mind and mental factors will also become the grasped. Pride itself is neither temporal nor form, because...

It is the same as taking, and the reason for the form of the agent of taking. Others say: Whatever is not different from the body's senses is grasped. Such grasping of the body's senses should be examined. If that is the case, wouldn't it be a fault that form and so on, and mind and mental events, are not grasped because they are not senses and are not supports? Answer: Form and so on, and mind and mental events, which are not different from the senses, are supports, so there is no fault in this. It should be definitely understood that touch is of two kinds. The remaining nine forms are: Also including one aspect of the element of arising phenomena, because it is said so. Because it exists in the elements, it is said to be because the elements exist, it is said that with the nature of arising and so on, the elements become its cause, so it is said to exist in the elements. Having said the remainder, it would also become a fault of not being form, so form is said. The element of phenomena also has non-manifest form, so it is said to be the ninth of that which is form. Because non-manifest form is also transformed from the elements, in order to include it, it is said to also include one aspect of the element of phenomena. The meaning of the word 'also' is the meaning of inclusion. Others say: The meaning of the word 'also' is to show that it is not only the nature of the element of arising that exists. The remaining ones are established as not being both simply by not being created. The ten sense bases are only elements, it is said, in which the meaning of the word 'only' is to distinguish that which is transformed from the elements. If that is the case, the question and answer are not reasonable. The ten sense bases are only elements, it is said, that is not the case. Because one cannot be convinced by mere words, the reason is stated: The elements are for definitely understanding the four natures and the characteristics such as hardness. It is said in the sutra: For definitely understanding the four natures, and for definitely understanding the characteristics such as hardness. Among them, these are the four great elements, thus definitely understanding as four, and what is the limit of earth? It is hardness, thus speaking extensively.
