It is called "grasping at the whole as self" because, being ignorant of the cause, one grasps at the whole of the whole, thinking it is self. Or, having grasped at the phenomena arising from the mind as a whole, later grasping at them as self, one apprehends feeling, perception, and volition as being of the same nature as each other and as self, and thus becomes manifestly attached to self. Therefore, the grasping at the whole precedes the grasping at those as self. To counteract the grasping at the whole, the exposition of the aggregates is begun. Thus, by showing the distinctions of feeling and so forth, the grasping at the aggregates as a whole will be reversed, and the grasping at self will also be reversed, since it is the precursor. Some connect "only form" with "being completely deluded by grasping at the whole as self." As an antidote to that complete delusion, form itself is divided into ten aspects, and mind and mental phenomena are of the same origin. Thus, by dividing into wholes, the grasping at self, which is preceded by grasping at the whole, will be reversed. Some tend to think that it is delusion about form and mind. To counteract their delusion, in the exposition of the elements, form is divided into ten aspects and mind into seven aspects and explained. Among these, the delusion about mind and mental phenomena is a lesser form of delusion, because it is delusion about subtle things and similar kinds. Delusion about form is a medium form of delusion, because it is delusion about coarse things and similar kinds. Delusion about both form and mind is a great form of delusion, because it is delusion about subtle and coarse, similar and dissimilar things. Thus, the exposition of the aggregates counteracts the complete delusion mentioned above and the view of the perishable aggregate as the precursor to grasping at the whole, and it also abandons the afflictions that precede it. Regarding "the faculties are also of three kinds," here the faculties refer to faith and so on. Dull and middling faculties can understand the detailed divisions of the realms and sources, but not the exposition of the aggregates. For dull faculties, the detailed division of the realms...

It is not by the birth that can benefit. For those with sharp and medium faculties, by indicating the aggregates and indicating the sources, they can understand the difference between the sources and the realms. Therefore, indicating the sources and indicating the realms would become meaningless, or they would not trust the Thus-Gone One. Therefore, one should indicate the aggregates for those with sharp faculties, indicate the sources for those with medium faculties, and indicate the realms for those with dull faculties. In this way, everyone can be benefited. In the saying "Desire also has three aspects," desire is intention. Otherwise, indicating different dharmas for different intentions would only become a cause of distrust. Therefore, according to the differences in the intentions of those to be tamed, they should be divided into three aspects through the aggregates and so on. All of these are for the purpose of distinguishing dharmas, because without distinguishing dharmas, one cannot abandon afflictions. The necessity of indicating the aggregates has already been known before. Apart from that, what is the non-contradiction of dividing the mind-born dharmas into different aggregates, and what is the purpose of saying it here again? This will be extensively explained. Because one wants to obtain, it is desire, which is the objects such as form. Particularly clinging to them is desire-attachment. Views refer to the view of the perishable collection and so on. Particularly clinging to them is also just desire-attachment. The former is mostly for householders, and the latter is mostly for renunciants. Just as it is said in the sutras, because of particularly clinging, being infatuated, completely clinging, and being accompanied by desire-attachment, householders will quarrel and fight with householders. What these two cling to are feeling and perception. The reason why these two are mainly mentioned is because ignorance and so on are also the causes of these two. In the saying "Due to feeling tasting flavors," tasting flavors is excellent because feeling itself tastes flavors, so it is feeling tasting. It is like a sweet taste, so it is tasting flavors, and due to its influence, one develops strong attachment to desire through the way of desire-attachment. Or, for feeling tasting
