Forms and so on that belong to its continuum are called external. Coarse is with obstruction, which is the nature of the ten sense bases. Subtle is without obstruction, which is non-revealing form. Or it is relative, for example, the form of a loquat is coarse, while the form of an emblic myrobalan is subtle. If it is said that it is not established because it is not relative, that is, there is no abiding, then, just as the form of an emblic myrobalan is also subtle and coarse relative to a loquat and an oak, wouldn't it slightly abide in subtle and coarse? Just like this shore and that shore, if you say so, it is not right, because it is different due to relativity. What is said to be expressed manifestly in relation to something, that relation is the occasion, like father and son. Bad is afflicted, that is, obscured and unwholesome. Vast is not afflicted, that is, virtuous and unobscured and neutral. Distant is past and future, because they are mutually separated by present things. Near is present, because it is offered by past and future. Or the agent, past and future, is distant. The present is near. It is the same up to consciousness, that is, any feeling, perception, or formation, or any consciousness, past, future, or present, or internal, or external, or coarse, or subtle, or bad, or vast, or whatever exists in a distant place, or whatever exists in a near place, all of those are gathered together and enter into the count called the aggregate of consciousness. Among them, except for coarse and subtle, the past and so on are declared as they are. Therefore, this is the difference, it is said. Coarse relies on the five senses, which is said to be because it follows the support. Subtle arises from the mind, which is said to be because it is the support of non-accumulation and non-obstruction. Or even earth, which is said to be because it is relative, what belongs to the desire realm is coarse, and what belongs to the peak of existence is subtle. Past and future are expressed with their own words, but are said to be distant.

Because the meanings of addition, inferiority, and abundance were not fully satisfied, the Vaibhashikas said so. The so-called "Venerable" is the Sthavira Dharmagupta of the Dṛṣṭāntika school. The so-called "grasped by the five senses" refers to the five external ayatanas. The so-called "the rest are subtle" refers to what is grasped by the mind sense, that is, the colored ayatanas such as the eye, and non-representative form. The so-called "unpleasant" means not in accordance with the mind. Therefore, it cannot please or delight. Pleasant means in accordance with the mind. Therefore, it is pleasing to the mind and can make one happy. Thus, in terms of the meaning of piercing, it is inferior, and in terms of the meaning of satisfying, it is abundant. The so-called "far" is "object invisible," which is in terms of the object of reliance. Although some are near, they are invisible because they are subtle, hence the mention of object. Even if it is slightly closer, it can become an invisible object due to interruption. However, its reliance can be seen by place and nature, so the suffix krit should be understood as the meaning of ability. The so-called "near" is "object visible," such as stars, etc., which are slightly far away but visible, hence the saying that the object is visible. Furthermore, why do the Venerable Vaibhashikas explain distance and proximity in a different way? Therefore, it is said to show the names of the past, etc. It is said that to make a slight distinction with one's own voice is because the distinction does not belong to the characteristics of other things, otherwise there will be no difference. The so-called "near and far of those" means that feelings, etc., which rely on invisible objects, are far, and those that rely on visible objects are near. The so-called "like the former" means that what relies on the senses is coarse. What arises from the mind is subtle. Or, as it is said, it is the same as from the earth. The meaning of the gate of arising of mind and mental factors is the meaning of the ayatana. How is it known? It can be known from the determinative compound, that is, mind and mental factors appear extensively. Arising means coming.
