If someone asks: How should it be understood that only the four great elements, earth, water, fire, and wind, are the great elements, and not space? Answer: Space does not have the reason to benefit or harm things like the elements do, because space does not have the same characteristics as the elements, and because space provides opportunity, it is not an element. The elements can also benefit or harm it. If someone asks: Where there is a gathering of form, space cannot enter, so it is unreasonable to say that space provides opportunity. Answer: Because it exists with an unobstructed nature, it is without obstruction. It does not have the function of benefiting or harming. Therefore, for those with obstruction, space provides opportunity, so there is a designation. Therefore, the space element or space itself is designated. In this way, because space does not produce various results, space is not a great element. If one sees that the elements such as earth can produce various results such as eyes, then space is constant and unique, and not diverse. That which is not constant and diverse cannot produce various results and impermanence from causes. Because there is no difference in space at the time of the arising and destruction of things, space is not a great element like earth and so on. If one sees that the elements in the state of seeds and so on transform and become the cause of the state of sprouts and so on when they arise, then space does not transform in this way, because space is constant. Others say: Space is great, but not an element, because elements are a category of birth. As it is said: Because the great elements themselves are reasonable, and if any four are not complete, one cannot produce things transformed from the elements, so there are neither more nor less, only four. The Vaibhashikas say: Without function, it becomes meaningless, like a four-legged bed. Again, if one asks: If the purpose is only to show the nature of "these elements," why speak of the function of the earth element and so on? Answer: Even if the nature of those elements in which all form aggregates is not observed, it can be inferred that their function exists. Therefore, they are different from each other.

It will also be narrated. For example, stones and so on have the characteristics of gathering, increasing, and decaying, so it should be understood that the earth element works together with water and wind. For water, one can also see the characteristics of carrying boats, the initial "ma (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思)", fruits ripening, warmth, and flow, so earth, wind, and fire work together with the water element; for fire, one can also see stability, existence in containers, and flow, so earth, water, and wind work together with fire; for wind, one can also see holding, drying clothes, and entering and flowing everywhere, so it should be understood that it works together with fire and water. If you ask what is the difference between karma and nature, it is that it depends on action, and also depends on the practical material holding of karma. Therefore, because it depends on the practical material holding of karma, for the earth element, it should be said that it has the function of holding. Relying on gathering everything, relying on telling the function of gathering everything else, one should tell the function of having "ma (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思)". For fire, because it depends on sprouts and so on, it should be said that it has the function of nourishing and growing. Others say that the nature and functions of the elements are the three and one itself. Nature is one's own nature itself, and that is all dependent on other things, and that is the difference. What makes growth is four kinds, making increase and making growth. Increase is the sprouts and so on growing more on top, bottom, and surface, etc., while growth is the trees and so on growing uninterruptedly in other places. Hard, moist, heat and flow, for what is said, explaining the causes of things is to know that things are not different from matter. That is why it is said that warmth itself is the fire element. The nature of things is nature itself, in order not to be confused. It will be told between hardness and stickiness. Moisture is the water element, for what is said, because it has the nature of moisture, it is moisture. Others say it is separation itself. Warmth is a synonym for burning. Saying composition is because the formless does not exist in a place, or cannot produce in other places.
