Because it becomes the cause of merit, it is merit. Those who pursue good deeds should become accustomed to it, this is a concluding word. These are divided by the two distinctions of cause and effect. Among them, the cause refers to the accumulation of merit and the accumulation of wisdom. The accumulation of merit is the three perfections, namely generosity, discipline, and meditation. As it is said, these three are the objects of merit, that is, the object of merit arising from generosity, the object of merit arising from discipline, and the object of merit arising from meditation. The perfection of wisdom is the accumulation of wisdom. Diligence and patience belong to both, because it is impossible for generosity and so on to be without them. Others say that the perfections of generosity, discipline, and patience are the accumulation of merit, and meditation and wisdom are the accumulation of wisdom. Meditation is in accordance with wisdom, and diligence is beneficial to both, so it belongs to both. The four kinds of perfect results are the perfection of wisdom, the perfection of abandonment, the perfection of benefiting others, and the perfection of the form body. Here, it is considered that the perfection of wisdom, abandonment, and benefiting others are the qualities of the result. Proclaiming qualities is to make the qualities manifest and clear. Among them, in the phrase "prostrating and composing," "among them" refers to one's own teacher. When expressing the word of prostration, the fourth case is used, but according to the difference in meaning, the change in case will completely change. "Prostrating and composing" is closely related to "wanting to compose a treatise," with the proclamation of uncommon qualities as the precursor, and bowing with the head is prostration. Doesn't merely proclaiming qualities establish the nature of greatness? Then, what is the use of prostration? Although prostration can also symbolize the nature of greatness, for those who do not have the nature of greatness, the teacher will not prostrate and compose a treatise, nor will he want to compose a treatise. Or, in order to accumulate merit in the mindstreams of oneself and others.

With body, speech, and mind, in order to make authentic offerings to the teacher, I begin the prostration with praise of virtues as a prelude. In this way, one can also understand the nature of greatness, and also diligently accumulate merit in one's own and others' continuums. Among these, by expressing the excellence of praising one's own teacher, the connection, necessity, and content to be explained are shown separately. Among them, the desire to compose a treatise is the connection. The purpose is to understand the nature of greatness. The words and meaning to be explained are: beginning the prostration with praise of virtues as a prelude. Because realization is the prelude, it is the meaning of the words because of realizing the pure meaning. Now, it should be considered that the so-called "whoever" is said from the perspective of the Buddha Bhagavan. The so-called "whoever" is all names, that is, general words, which cannot reside in individual things without relying on meaning, occasion, and signs, etc. Therefore, this is when explaining the Dharmapada, distinguishing others through the occasion, and only pointing to the Buddha Bhagavan himself. Because when starting to explain the Dharmapada, it should be understood that the excellent words of praise are not directed at objects other than the Buddha. Or, whatever discourses on wisdom, abandonment, and answering beings are said to be not possessed by others than the Buddha, therefore, the so-called "whoever" is said from the perspective of the Buddha Bhagavan. Possession is also seen as the reason why general words reside in individual things. For example, saying "bring the cow" refers to a cow with a calf, or something with pebbles. Because of possessing the power of wisdom that is unattached and unobstructed to all knowable things, one becomes a Buddha oneself, like a lotus blooming. Or, because the sleep of affliction and non-afflictive ignorance is permanently exhausted, one becomes a Buddha, like a person waking up from sleep. Just as waking up, a person waking up from sleep is called waking up himself, not being awakened by others, so it is here as well. Because of possessing the conquest of the four maras, he is Bhagavan. Those maras are also the mara of the son of the gods, the mara of afflictions, the mara of death, and the mara of aggregates.
