It is not produced, because, just because those are with outflows, but the realms, elements, and unequal portions are not food. In the place of unequal portions, even if it is the cause of growth, it is not food because it is not the cause of connecting that existence to the next life. These four foods arise extensively. Abiding in it is uninterrupted. Nourishment is to continuously follow. Or, the previous explanation is the latter. Benefiting is to make rebirth manifest. The phenomena without outflows are not like that, meaning not uninterrupted, or not making existence manifest. Therefore, contact and so on are only food if they are with outflows, not without outflows, as understood in the sutra. For a while, arising means birth and manifestation. Because it is born from mind, it is born only from mind. In that way, only mentioning mind will have results, otherwise not. To show this, external semen and blood, etc., are mentioned. The word "etc." includes urine, feces, mud, and flowers, etc. Because of eating scent, it means eating scent and eating as scent, because it is a way of seeking existence. Those who are not born mostly tend to be born, which is a way of seeking existence. Because of manifestly tending towards birth, for that purpose it manifests, and immediately after birth, it is manifestly tending towards birth. Others say that because at the end of death, all incomplete supports manifest. A body with harm arises, meaning that the intermediate existence manifests. In both explanations, the source is that because it is accompanied by suffering, one will be born into a world with harm, because after previously manifesting, one will be born into a world with harm. Because the four possibilities are spoken.

What does it mean? It should be combined with the phrase "the intermediate state is not manifestly accomplished." The first case is that of a non-returner who is free from desire from the two realms. Some say that it is also an ordinary person. Because it is said in the sutra, "Monks, whatever is abandoned by noble wisdom is abandoned." Others say it is an ordinary person. The second case is that of completely passing away from suffering in the intermediate state. The third case is that of an Arhat. The fourth case is that of a stream-enterer, a once-returner, a non-returner, one who approaches the realm of form, and ourselves, etc. Or, the one who has come into being is an Arhat, which means the one who has come into being and has already been born. It is not seeking existence, because it is free from desire from the three realms. Those who seek existence are those who have craving. Because they have not freed themselves from desire, they seek existence. Furthermore, what food sustains beings? It means that it is the cause of the existence of beings who are born. What helps those who seek existence? It means that it is also the cause of the manifest accomplishment of the existence of those who seek existence. Everything is both, meaning that all four foods sustain beings and help those who seek existence. For existence means for birth. Mental intention is the nature of karma, and the consciousness and discernment that correspond to it, because they have the same result as it, and are good and non-good, therefore depend on helping those who seek existence. If the food born of contact is not the nature of karma and is indeterminate, then how can it be said to help those who seek existence? Therefore, the food born of contact is spoken of in detail. In order to understand this meaning, the Blessed One spoke of the four foods, etc., diseases and fruits, double goiters and old age and death, etc., are words for the names of the five aggregates of appropriation that appear again in this sutra.
