It possesses only eight, namely those related to pleasant feeling and equanimity, with objects such as form, sound, and phenomena, and so forth. Here too, it should be stated as it is. The phrase "except for those with smell and taste as objects" means that because smell and taste are entirely virtuous, they are excluded. One born in a lower realm has not attained the mind of a higher realm. One of a higher realm possesses only afflictions, and not virtue. The phrase "having obtained the virtuous mind of the form realm" refers to the ground of the path of no relapse, but not the actual state, because it is not yet free from desire. Thus, having obtained the path of no relapse, one then becomes free from desire from the desire realm, because one is not yet free from desire from all sensual pleasures. Beings of the desire realm, not being free from desire, possess only the four afflictions of the ground of actual meditative absorption related to pleasant feeling, and not virtuous or neutral states, because they depend on application and arising. The phrase "except for those with smell and taste as objects" is because those related to smell and taste are entirely virtuous. The phrase "those with the ground of the path of no relapse as their object" refers to those with the desire realm as their object. The phrase "the equanimity-related of the ground of the path of no relapse possesses six" means because the mind of the ground of the path of no relapse has been obtained. Four of the ground of actual meditative absorption and six of the path of no relapse, thus there are ten. If it is said that the four afflictions related to equanimity of the ground of meditative absorption and the ground, and the four virtuous qualities of the path of no relapse with upper and lower as objects are also possessed, is it not so? It is indeed so, but these are not counted separately, because they are of the nature of equanimity and the ground is not different. The phrase "as before" means that in meditative absorptions, except for smell and taste, the ground of the second meditative absorption possesses eight. The ground of the third and fourth meditative absorptions possesses four. The phrase "one who practices in the formless realm possesses only one affliction" should be understood thoroughly in all cases. The phrase "by this method" means by this reason or this rule.

This is a brief explanation. One born in a lower realm also possesses the afflictions of the higher realm, but not virtue and the indeterminate, except for the attainment and arising of that realm. Observing the attainment of that realm, it is associated with virtue, and observing the arising, it is also associated with the indeterminate. Why? Because it is a realm free from desire, hence the afflictions of that realm are mentioned. Those with afflictions of that realm are not associated with them. One born in a higher realm is not associated with all of the lower realm, except for the equanimity that pervades, born together with the mind of nirvana. Relying on the object of the desire realm, there are actual meditations, which become sixfold, and as appropriate, also twelvefold. If it is said that the access meditations of the second dhyana and so forth are those that focus on the lower realm, it is not so, because the pervasive aspects of smell and taste have been abandoned there by the path. Here, pleasant feeling is not entirely virtuous, and the actual formless meditations do not focus on the lower realm. Having understood this characteristic, it should be widely proclaimed. Here, the individual born in the desire realm is divided into three types, namely, Kathamala, who has attained the mind of the higher realm and is free from desire, and so on. Here, the nature of the individual is explained as Tsala, Bhila, Bitsa, which means free from desire. One who is free from desire and engages in desire is not associated with the pervasive unpleasant feeling, the afflicted and the non-afflicted. Since there is no unpleasant feeling for one who is free from desire, this is associated with the pervasive pleasant feeling and equanimity, and is virtuous. The twelve non-afflicted aspects of the first dhyana realm, and the eight afflicted and non-afflicted aspects that focus on the desire realm are associated. One who has attained the access meditation of the second dhyana is associated with the twelve non-afflicted aspects of the desire realm, and the twelve afflicted and non-afflicted aspects of the first dhyana realm, and the four virtuous aspects of the equanimity that pervades the second dhyana realm, and the four afflicted aspects of the actual realm of meditation that pervade pleasant feeling, and the pervasive equanimity, and so on.
