However, this also becomes the thought itself. Therefore, it is said that it is not contradictory to the fact that all phenomena are of the nature of being conditioned. Since it is not the basis of existence, it contradicts entering, therefore the question is asked: How are the unpolluted ones? Because it is not a result of maturation. In order to obtain, it means saying: May I obtain the unpolluted dharmas. Nirvana also becomes a fault, this statement is connected to "the nature of being conditioned." This is also because it can be obtained by virtue itself, so it is thought with the mind. Because it is similar to this, it means that the future phenomena are answered in terms of the nature of being conditioned and the nature of dependent arising. Because it is similar to being conditioned, and similar to dependent arising, the unmade and unborn phenomena are also said to be conditioned and dependent arising, and they are compared in this way consistently. Here, for the past and present arisen phenomena, the words "conditioned and dependent arising" are real, but for the future it is imputed, and it should be understood in this way. For this, for example, temporarily it cannot become form, this statement is explained extensively. With the word "can become form," it indicates that this, which has a reason for action, is similar to that, therefore it is not contradictory to the future form without reason, similarly, it is not contradictory here either. To this, some people think that since the example and the exemplified thing are the same, this answer is unreasonable, but it is not so, because dependent arising also establishes the extremely unmanifest by the extremely manifest. Just as the future has not become form, but because it is similar it is called form, similarly, the unmade and unborn phenomena are also called conditioned and dependent arising because they are similar to the future. In this way, there is no opportunity for argument here. Regarding the purity of cause and effect and like a son, just as the seed itself depends on the cause, it is the effect, and depending on the effect, it is called the cause. Similarly, it depends on the son, it is the father, and depending on the father, it is the son.

Just as it is said, the limb itself arises dependently in relation to the fruit, and it is called dependent arising in relation to the cause. Thus established, it will not be destroyed. The elder Śāntarakṣita says that the thought of Śāntarakṣita is that just as it arises from a cause, everything is dependent arising. Just as it becomes the cause of other things, it is also dependent arising, this seems to be the meaning. Thus, the first case is future dharmas, because they have not arisen, so they are dependent arising; because they become the cause of other things, they are also dependent arising. The second case is the last moment of an Arhat, because it has arisen. Thus, the last moment of an Arhat has passed, or now other dharmas arise from me, this is not possible. The third case is "other than that," which refers to the past and present dharmas other than the last moment of an Arhat, these dharmas are both because they have arisen and become the cause of other things. The fourth case is unconditioned dharmas, because they have not arisen and are not causes. Neither is the case, which means that even unconditioned dharmas are not dependent arising because they have no cause, because they do not possess the characteristics of a cause. So, what are the characteristics of a cause? "When this exists, that exists; when this arises, that arises; when this does not exist, that does not exist; when this ceases, that ceases." For unconditioned dharmas, although things arise when it exists, it is not arising; without it, it will not be without, and when it ceases, things will not cease, because it is free from arising and ceasing. The sound of saying "exists" is impossible. So, how should it be explained? Its nature is permanent, therefore, the nature that takes unconditioned dharmas as its object, with the nature of non-obstruction, is the cause of the makers of all conditioned dharmas. But it is not the continuum of the arising of conditioned dharmas, because it does not possess the characteristics of a cause. The teacher Śāntarakṣita said so. Thus, then for the maker of the unarisen dharma, there is also no characteristic of a cause.
