This is the search for the substance of the body. What does this mean? It means in what way, in what circumstances does it exist. If the trace of the body cannot be determined, then what exists? What is it that we exist as now? What is it that changes? It is in this way that it is uncertain. What are ignorance and formations, etc.? It is to dispel ignorance of the past extreme. Birth and death are the future extreme. Consciousness to existence in between is to dispel ignorance of the middle. Like this, it is explained in detail in the sutra itself. For what reason is it in that very sutra? Dependent origination is this existing, so this arises; this arising, so this arises, which is the nature of the twelve limbs. The dharmas of dependent origination are formations, etc. Seeing it as it is with correct wisdom is explained in detail as formations arising from ignorance, consciousness arising from formations, etc. The twelve limbs, such as ignorance, are the states of the five aggregates. Not following the past extreme, etc., is because of understanding the relationship between cause and effect, and because of understanding that it is merely dharma. Craving, grasping, and existence, etc., are explained in detail, these cravings, etc., although they are the intermediate existence, are to dispel ignorance of the future extreme, because this is its cause. The Vaibhashikas say that those consciousnesses, etc., up to feeling, are also its result, so it is to dispel ignorance of the past extreme. Or ignorance and formations, etc., are also its cause, so it is to dispel ignorance of the middle, it should be admitted. If that is the case, the past or intermediate part does not exist, so it contradicts the sutra. Therefore, the former has no fault. There are three afflictions, ignorance is the cause of the present birth, craving and grasping are the cause of the future birth. There are two actions, which are the present and future births.

The cause of that is action and existence. That which is called the seven branches, in the present life, are the five, from consciousness to feeling, and the two, future birth and old age and death. Furthermore, why are these called the base? It is said that it is because they are the support of karma and afflictions. This is a synonym for saying that it is the cause of karma and afflictions. Likewise, what is called the fruit is only the seven branches, which are the five from consciousness at the former extreme, and birth and old age and death at the latter extreme. The remaining five are said to be able to bring about maturation by the very nature of karma and afflictions. What is called the five bases are consciousness, name and form, the six sense sources, contact, and feeling, and so on. What are called the two distinct afflictions are craving and grasping, which is conditioned by it. Thus, in the middle, both cause and effect increase. Furthermore, how is it that craving is grasping, yet it is established separately? The Vaibhashikas say that the first moment of craving is expressed by the word craving, and the extensive one is expressed by the word grasping, because it holds the object very firmly through the door of continuity. If that is the case, wouldn't the moments and so on become three branches? Since it is also accepted as two, there is no fault in this. Since there are many moments from the moment of each object, the moment of linking is the birth of consciousness, so that is one moment. Furthermore, why is only craving shown in this way, and not other afflictions? It is shown by the distinction between moment and continuity, because the actual accomplishment of existence

Everything is the cause of karma, therefore, here the word "existence" encompasses all afflictions, and it should be understood in this way in order to point out its faults. Here, it is not used as a rebuttal. Because the different branches of the three stages of life will be explained. If it were not so, it would contradict the twelve branches being the conditioned arising of the stages of the five aggregates. In "future time" etc., birth is the cause of aging and death, thus it is a summary of the result. The so-called "to show one door of afflictions" means: "Ignorance, affliction, previous stage." Therefore, by the single door of ignorance, all afflictions are shown, which is a summary of the cause. Also, "why" should be combined with everything because it is the appropriate time. Karma is also shown to be brief in the past and in the middle, so it is not analyzed in detail. Also, the so-called "no meaningless effort was made," because the cause is shown in detail in the middle, so the cause is also shown in detail at the end of the past, and the result is shown in detail, so the result can be understood at the end of the future. Because all births are prior, intermediate, and subsequent depending on the difference, therefore, it becomes meaningless to speak of the result in detail at the two ends of the prior and the subsequent, and to say it again is a meaningless effort. If it is said that dependent arising is only the twelve branches, then it is said extensively, five branches are the cause, and seven branches are the result, so it is only the twelve branches, because there are no other causes and results. In this way, because ignorance has no cause, it will lead to the cycle having a beginning, and because old age and death have no result, it will lead to having an end, therefore, merely not having an antidote will lead to not having existence. If one admits the cause and effect of both ignorance and old age and death, then it will also lead to incomplete display due to redundant branches, and it will lead to the cause and effect not being exhausted, if one says so, then "from affliction arises affliction, that is the action itself" will be spoken extensively.
