Furthermore, the stage of name and form is different from the stage of consciousness and the six sense bases, because there is no stage of name and form. As it says: Name and form, before that, the six sense bases arise, after this. It will be declared as such. Therefore, there are no twelve limbs in the form realm. In the formless realm, the practitioner does not have the stage of name and form and the stage of the six sense bases, because the formless realm does not have these, therefore there are ten limbs. Thus, in the "Great Discourse on the Categories of Dharma," it is extensively said, "Ananda, if consciousness does not enter the mother's womb, will that consciousness grow, expand, and become vast?" Because it is said so in the sutra, it is impossible to enter the mother's womb except in the desire realm. Therefore, the past ignorance and actions increase, causing the currently arising consciousness, name and form, six sense bases, contact, and feeling to enter. Similarly, the craving, grasping, and becoming that arise in this way increase, causing future birth and death to enter, and it should be understood that this is in terms of continuity. In this way, if it is in terms of all beings, then the establishment of the limbs of existence will be confused. Because the previous and later ends, as well as the results and causes, are mentioned. Because the previous end, as well as the result, and the later end, as well as the cause, are mentioned. The twelve links of dependent origination and the three parts are the previous end and the later end, divided into two types. Among them, the previous end is ignorance and action. Its result is the limbs of consciousness, name, form, six sense bases, contact, and feeling. Thus, the seven limbs are the previous end. What is the later end? It is birth and death. Its cause is the limbs of craving, grasping, and becoming. Thus, the five limbs are the later end. Furthermore, what are these, such as ignorance? It means, is ignorance merely not knowing? Or is it thought that all afflictions are, and therefore the question is asked, thus.

It should also be said to others. Therefore, it is said, "When ignorance and afflictions previously exist." The reason for saying "previously" is that the present (afflictions) are encompassed by craving and acceptance. Why are all afflictions spoken of in terms of ignorance? Because they are determined to be the fundamental nature of the actions that project rebirth. Because actions that are thoroughly transformed by afflictions become capable of projecting rebirth. Those without afflictions, even if they have karma, will not have rebirth. Not all are actions that project rebirth, because in the entry of actions, afflictions such as desire are not the sole agents. Ignorance is delusion, therefore all afflictions are spoken of in its name. Where do these come from? Because ignorance is primary and operates together with it. To show this, it is said, "Because of operating together." All afflictions exist similarly to ignorance, but not mutually, therefore they only operate together with ignorance. "Its power" refers to the power of ignorance. Those are the afflictions. Universal arising refers to birth; for those who are not deluded, the arising of other afflictions does not exist. For example, the king has passed away, and so on. The intermediate Shama refers to those who operate together with the king, because their power does not intervene or regress, so the king is primary. The scholar Sangharakshita says: If all afflictions that operate together with ignorance exist in this way, then other afflictions themselves are primary, so ignorance as the primary of another primary, operating together is unreasonable. If the wisdom that operates together with all afflictions is itself ignorance, then it also obtains a temporary sound, because it operates together with desire and so on. Even if there is no mutual operating together, there is no difference. If it is said again that the action of completely entering is governed by ignorance, then it is desire and so on. The universally operating desire and so on are the action of ignorance completely entering, therefore it is viparyāpatti. If
