Furthermore, those who are extremely fierce. Because it is determined by the ripening, it is the complete one. Because of its greatness, it is extremely fierce. Because of accumulation, it is the complete one. Only the living are surrounded by the fires of hell, therefore, the karma experienced in this present life is the first to ripen. How should this be measured now? It is said to be the thought of whether there is an intermediate state. This, that arises immediately, means to be born in hell with the body separated. The one born in the intermediate state is said to be the one who is born extensively. Approaching in accordance is birth, and appearing and tending towards it is the intermediate state. Therefore, after death, one is born in hell only through the intermediate state, not as one who has already been born. If it is said that one is born in hell immediately, then there will be no intermediate state. The Brahmin has taken his age, and so on, which means that at the time of death, this one has taken his age, therefore, it is said that he has taken his age. This is the basis for the absence of an intermediate state here. Here, how do you immediately say that there is an intermediate state? This is the intended meaning, and we do not accept that there is no intermediate state, this is not the intended meaning. Why is this? It is said that the teacher's observation is also the same as yours, and it is said that this is the meaning of the question. Here, you say that there is no intermediate state, this is the intended meaning, and we say that there is an intermediate state, this is not the intended meaning, why is this? Thus, on both sides, it is said to be extensively born. There is an intermediate state, there is no intermediate state, on both sides, you and the sutra that has been spoken do not contradict each other. This is said to be extensively born. The one who knows, the one who cannot know in another way, means the one who knows the meaning of the basis, in whom there is no one who can know another. Thus, the one who reveals, the verse or the sutra, the meaning of which cannot be led in a different way, is the basis.

That which does not contradict others eliminates the speaker himself. Furthermore, the Sarvāstivādins' assertion that "there is no intermediate existence" is a wrong view preceded by complete ignorance of cause and effect. This is just like the statement in such and such a sutra that there are no spontaneously born beings. Moreover, where does the doubt about the existence of birth arise, given the widespread occurrence of phrases like "where will they go"? If the results of karma are said to be both one and many, it contradicts the sutras. For whom, the fully established attachment of the person has not been abandoned, and the attachment to birth has been abandoned, and the attachment to birth has been abandoned, and so on, extensively, the karmas that have become the instigation of afflictions, like the afflictions, will become different. Because the karmas are different, this is not desired; know that this is the form of the previous existence. Furthermore, from the result of this one (karma), what determination has been made that the previous and subsequent results of that (karma) will arise? Because the karmas such as the visible Dharma result are collected, it will necessarily become something that must be experienced. People who perform black karma, etc., we see that they do not depend on different shapes. Then, from the classification of karma, this investigation arises here: whether the form of the intermediate existence of all beings going to hell, etc., is one that manifests and is accomplished, or whether different forms will arise? Thus, it is distinguished, and therefore it is said in detail, "Because that is the only projection." Karma is of two kinds: projection and completion. Among these, completion is multiple, but projection is single; therefore, it is said, "Because that is the only projection, the form of the previous existence arising." Because this has the form of the previous time's existence that will arise, it is "the form of the previous existence arising," like the sprout of barley. Saying the previous time is to distinguish it from the existence of death and the existence of birth as well. If only those who are born from the womb die, then the intermediate existence of the five realms will manifest and be accomplished. The others are called projection.
