The reason for this is that in one continuum, there are two similar material categories that are equally possessed. The term "immediately following" is used because the material categories are the same and have an uninterrupted result. If it is said that those that arise in connection without interruption are "immediately following," then according to their view, the mind and mental factors that arise from emerging from meditative absorption would be considered "immediately following," which would be a fallacy. All that is the same or only simultaneous is the collection of mind and mental factors that precedes. Because that is the uninterrupted cause of other things, others say that the same thing is the immediately following cause. Regarding "arising unequally," because the same thing has no meaning of immediately following, it is not the immediately following cause of the same thing. In order to show that the same thing has no meaning of immediately following, the term "functioning in the desire realm" is explained in detail. Functioning in the desire realm refers to the non-manifest form of the Pratimoksha vows. Functioning in the form realm refers to the form of the vows of meditative concentration. The unpolluted refers to the form of the unpolluted vows. When a person who has taken vows does not enter into meditative concentration or the path, then only functioning in the desire realm arises from the non-manifest form of functioning in the desire realm. When one enters into meditative concentration, the non-manifest forms of functioning in the desire realm and the form realm arise. When one enters the path, functioning in the desire realm and the unpolluted arise, and because form becomes manifest, it is confused. Regarding "the immediately following cause of the same thing is not confused," after the mind and mental factors functioning in the desire realm, things belonging to the desire realm and the form realm never arise. Regarding "functioning in the desire realm and the unpolluted," those things that arise the same and immediately following are considered by others to be the immediately following cause of the same thing. "The same" means that whatever is possessed is the possession itself, and being properly associated with feeling, etc., is being properly associated. "Immediately following" does not mean that the mind simultaneously has the nature of feeling, etc., but rather that in one mind, having desire and not having desire become manifest.

Now, this similarity is not the immediate cause. Venerable Vasumitra says that 'arising from increase' means arising in increase. How is it that it is increased by food and meditation, etc., and that which is born from maturation is uninterrupted, only that which is of the same kind as it is increased by meditation and food, etc., and that another form born from maturation arises in the same way, and that the virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral minds are uninterrupted, and that virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral minds do not arise. Others say that those born from the four great elements are born from the substance of minute particles by the form of many similar kinds taken closely. Mind and mental factors are not so. 'Venerable' refers to the Sutra Master, the Sthavira Dharmatrāta. 'Because of being very many and few' means arising in increase. Thus, it is not contradictory that form dharmas arise with an uncertain substance. Some very few become many, such as form from moss, etc. Some very many also become few, such as weak strength arising from a strong body. Therefore, this similarity is not the action of the immediate cause. 'Also for mental factors' means arising in increase. Thus, in the virtuous mind belonging to the desire realm, twenty-two mental factors arise, and in the unmixed non-virtuous mind, and in that which is associated with views, there are twenty. In the obscured, there are eighteen. In the unobscured, the neutral has twelve. Samadhi with investigation and analysis is the first dhyana. Without investigation but only analysis is a special dhyana. Without investigation and without analysis is from the second dhyana up to the peak of existence. These minds and samadhis are similar to each other and are considered to be the nature of the immediate cause. Mental factors also arise as very many and few, and like form, they contradict the entity of the similar immediate cause. For other kinds, there are, for investigation and analysis, etc., which change into other kinds, some minds
