If asked, isn't it said that way? The Blessed One himself proclaimed the characteristics of contaminated dharmas. What are contaminated dharmas? Whatever form is subject to clinging, and on whatever form, in the past, future, or present, attachment arises, or hatred arises, or ignorance, or anything else that troubles the mind. Similarly, up to consciousness, the reverse is uncontaminated. Therefore, the Blessed One said: Bhikshus, you should proclaim the contaminated and uncontaminated dharmas. How then should one understand that the explanation of the characteristics of contaminated and uncontaminated dharmas is not contradictory? Regarding this, like "even if it is an object, it will not increase," etc., in elaborating in detail, one should understand what is said here: "Uncontaminated is not the realm of the higher, not taken as one's own, it is for the sake of the antidote." (Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanization, Chinese literal meaning) Contaminated is like food mixed with poison. (Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanization, Chinese literal meaning) Uncontaminated is the truth of the path. If only the contaminated is negated, isn't it from this that one knows that it is uncontaminated? Why then is it included among the uncontaminated? This is to refute the view of the Sautrantikas, that in different ways, it can be both contaminated and uncontaminated. Because it is separated from the contaminated, there is no reason to determine that it is uncontaminated. If it is not like that, merely through stating the manner, by negating from the contaminated, one can understand through meaning that it is uncontaminated, then, if it is not explained, one can also understand through meaning, then, since it is said that "conditioned phenomena are all contaminated," then for the unconditioned, which is not explained, one can understand that it is uncontaminated. (Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanization, Chinese literal meaning) "If one proclaims this, then one should not say that." (Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanization, Chinese literal meaning) Even the unconditioned should not be said to be uncontaminated like the path. From the juxtaposition of the two ways, a third kind of distinction is not possible, this is not the path. The term 'path' is common to both mundane and supramundane, but here

In order to distinguish it from the mundane, it is said, "the truth of the path that is without outflows." It is precisely for this reason that the truth of the path is mentioned. The mundane is only the path, not the truth of the path. It is also said in the commentary that because it relies on what is to be explained, it says, "except for the truth of the path." Alternatively, this is based on an established fact and is for the purpose of certainty. Because the truth of the path is separated from conditioned phenomena and has already been established as being without outflows, it is mentioned again among the phenomena without outflows for the purpose of certainty. Some people think that from the object of the realm of complete knowledge, all minds and mental factors, as well as the form of an arhat that is not apprehended, are without outflows. Therefore, it must be certain that among conditioned phenomena, only the truth of the path is without outflows, and not other conditioned phenomena. Similarly, some only acknowledge that analytical cessation is unconditioned and without outflows, but not space. Space is with outflows and unconditioned, and they do not acknowledge non-analytical cessation. Others acknowledge that the three unconditioned phenomena are imputed, but not substantial. Therefore, even though it has already been excluded that unconditioned phenomena are with outflows, in order to understand that one should acknowledge unconditioned phenomena themselves, phenomena without outflows themselves, and substantial phenomena, it is said, "there are also the three unconditioned phenomena." Alternatively, if all phenomena are summarized, they can be divided into two types: phenomena with outflows and phenomena without outflows. Among these, phenomena with outflows have already been explained in terms of their nature and characteristics, that is, "conditioned phenomena other than the path," which is from the perspective of their own nature. Because for these phenomena, "outflows will completely increase," this is from the perspective of characteristics. Similarly, phenomena without outflows also need to be explained in terms of their own nature and characteristics, therefore it is said, "the truth of the path without outflows, and also the three unconditioned phenomena," which is from the perspective of their own nature. Although the characteristics are not stated, they can be understood from the opposite of what has already been said, that is, "for these phenomena, outflows will not increase." Therefore, this is the characteristic.
