That's what they say. Even now, there is no joy in the first moment, and things like the arising of later Dharma activities from the joy of the previous Dharma are not valid as definitions. As for "impermanence itself destroys," the particularly excellent cause that arises simultaneously with the cessation of conditioned phenomena is impermanence itself. As for "these three are from the Sutra," the characteristics of conditioned phenomena are said to be three in the Sutra. If the characteristics of conditioned phenomena were four, then the fourth would also be mentioned there. But it is not mentioned, and the Sutra is also a valid प्रमाण (Sanskrit, Devanagari: प्रमाण, Roman transliteration: pramāṇa, literal meaning: valid cognition), therefore the characteristics of conditioned phenomena are only three. If one thinks it is impossible not to show the fourth and asks, that means, "what is not said there?" Abiding is taken as the particularity of changing into another state, so it is thought that it is not taken as a characteristic of conditioned phenomena. Abiding and changing, thinking that it is abiding and changing, so it is explained in detail, "then." This is considered a synonym for aging, and so on. Just as the arising of things is a synonym for birth, and the destruction of things is the destruction of impermanence itself, in the same way, in order to prove that things are in another state, abiding and changing into another state itself is a synonym for aging. In the Sutra, it is explained in detail, "due to the actions arising from intention, which Dharmas." The statements in the Sutra are intentional, not definitional, while those arising from Abhidharma are definitional, not intentional, so there is no contradiction. Also, what is this "passage of time"? It is what changes from the future to the present, and from the present to the past. As for "birth causes the aggregates," it is explained in detail in the Sutra. If one asks how to understand that birth and so on have the ability to make time pass, then which of their abilities can be understood by direct perception? If they did not exist, how would one understand the past and future as conditioned phenomena? Even unconditioned phenomena exist because they abide in their own characteristics. Therefore, abiding cannot be understood as a conditioned phenomenon, because it is confused. Abiding is

Because there are aspects of conditioned and unconditioned as a basis, in order for the beings to be tamed to realize the unconditioned as unconditioned, or the conditioned as unconditioned, if it is not allowed, in order not to generate doubt, it is not said. Those who are not confused about the conditioned, those are the characteristics of the conditioned as stated in the sutras. If someone asks: Would this itself become a fault for the Abhidhamma? Answer: It will not become a fault, because it is not promised that the nature of the unconditioned exists separately. Conditioned phenomena also exist with the nature of past things, etc. "Existence and aging are collected" and other extensive statements will appear. If it is not like this, then it is only said to appear in other places, because here the word "existence" cannot find any use at all. If it is shown that way, the existence of the conditioned will appear to transform in other places, but the existence of the unconditioned does not have that. If someone asks: Are those such as birth also like the fundamental dharma, then will there be others such as birth? Answer: When those such as "birth of birth" appear, some people, in order to have to grasp firmly, will say "those are unique to those, and not others to those," and will also utter the sound "also." If someone asks: Which common characteristics did the Blessed One speak of? Answer: Because birth and others are all conditioned, and the birth of birth and others are also the nature of birth and others, so "the conditioned also appears as birth," etc., isn't it personally said in the sutra in terms of characteristics? How can the common characteristics here be understood here? Because statements such as "also for everything" are contradictory. The conditioned also appears as birth, and the sound "also" is the same for the other two. If it is not like that, there is no use at all in saying the sound "also" for all three. If someone asks: Wouldn't each one become four characteristics? Answer: Because it is conditioned, it is like the fundamental dharma. The statement that there are other births, etc., for those refers to those outside of them. Or if someone asks: Shouldn't the birth of birth, etc., also be promised for the fundamental birth, etc.? Answer: It will not change, because that is the eight dharmas.
