Ra. The noble ones have extensively spoken of the term "basis." The basis where the noble path has not arisen is the seed of afflictions to be abandoned by seeing and meditation, and because it becomes the cause of other subsequent related bases, at that time it is called an ordinary being, because it generates another moment connected with the seeds of all the afflictions of the three realms. The antidote to afflictions is the manifestation of the path of seeing or the path of meditation, and if that is manifested, then the seed of afflictions to be abandoned by those bases and the subsequent related moment are not the cause, because the condition contrary to arising has been obtained. The seed of afflictions to be abandoned, only the nature of non-regression, between them, obtaining the condition that is in accordance with its arising and subsequent, is the nature of the cause, that is, the past. Therefore, those bases also cannot generate the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing and meditation, because there is no seed. Those without seeds should not arise, because it is too extreme. For that very reason, from the cessation of the seed of afflictions, by the power of the path of seeing and meditation, the afflictions to be abandoned by them will also not arise. It has become like that, because the seed has been uprooted from that basis. Therefore, it is said, "The basis is like a seed burned by fire," etc. Just as a seed burned by fire cannot produce a sprout, that basis also cannot produce a sprout, so it has not become a seed. Similarly, the basis is burned by the fire of the path and has not become a seed of afflictions, therefore it is called the abandonment of afflictions. If that is the case, then wouldn't it be that abandoning desire with the worldly would not abandon afflictions? Because the worldly path cannot cut off the seed of afflictions. Therefore, if the basis, by means of the worldly path, causes the entity of the seed of afflictions to deteriorate, then it is called the abandonment of afflictions. The opposite is what is called not abandoned. In the case of not abandoned, if the noble and non-noble paths have not burned the basis and have not caused the entity of the seed to deteriorate, then it is not the abandonment of afflictions.

It is said thus. Because there exists a seed that has not been eradicated from its root and has not been damaged in its basis, it is in accordance with that which has not been abandoned. Because the seed has been eradicated from its root from the basis, or because the seed has been damaged, it is not in accordance with that which has been abandoned. Thus, although there is no difference in being possessed of a worldly mind, because the seed has been eradicated from its root and not eradicated from its root in the basis, it is distinguished as noble ones and ordinary beings. Because of damaging and not damaging the seed, it is distinguished as those who are free from desire and those who are not free from desire in the world. Thus, it is taught that because the seed is interrupted and damaged, and because the continuity is not interrupted and not damaged, terminology is applied, which is the general statement. This association refers to the individual, because the sutra says that there are also virtuous dharmas and non-virtuous dharmas. At the end of stating the terminology of association and non-association of afflicted dharmas, virtuous dharmas should be stated, therefore it is extensively stated that virtuous dharmas are also of two types. Those who are born without effort are those who do not depend on effort, that is, those who obtain it merely by being born. Those who are born with effort are those who do not depend on birth, but obtain it through the distinction of application. Therefore, it is extensively stated, "Those who are born," that is, those who obtain it merely by being born and do not depend on other efforts, those are the ones who obtain it by birth. Here, birth refers to the connection of consciousness in the intermediate state, as appropriate, and the connection of consciousness in the state of birth. Those births that depend on the distinction of application are those that arise from application. Because they have not damaged the substance of the seed, in the phrase "because they have not damaged the substance of the seed," the word "they" is connected with those who are born without effort. For those whose roots of virtue are completely unbroken, because there is no wrong view, they have not damaged the substance of the seed, therefore it should be said that they are in accordance with those who are born without effort and those whose roots of virtue are completely unbroken. Then, by whom is the substance of the seed damaged? Therefore, it is said, "They damage it," and so on. The root of virtuous dharmas is always truly
