The so-called "saying" appears in a broad sense, and "establishment" means "the cause of determination." For the time being, ordinary beings all have mundane minds, and when the noble ones directly realize the uncontaminated path, they will transcend the world. Therefore, it is said that they have mundane minds. Mind is mind itself. When the path is directly realized, it is possible to establish noble ones and ordinary beings without attainment, because the path itself is the cause of establishment. For those who have mundane minds, it is impossible to say "these are noble ones, these are ordinary beings" without attainment, and this is not what is desired. Therefore, it can be determined that the attainment of the uncontaminated path, and the absence of it, are the causes of establishing noble ones and ordinary beings. The teacher Good Gathering said: Material dharma is impossible, so it is not feasible. This statement is not valid, because attainment is the cause of the dharma that has already been attained not being lost, and attainment is the sign of knowing "this is this." If you say, is it possible to use another name to say "different from this and having fruit" as the cause of establishment? The cause of non-loss, and becoming a sign of knowing the difference, is also unreasonable, because attainment is not manifest. If it is said by the Buddhas? It is also not possible for the Buddhas to say it, because it would become the fault of recollection. It is also unreasonable to determine and grasp the nature and fruit, and think that it exists. If you deny attainment, then the establishment of noble ones and ordinary beings, and the non-loss of the dharma of attainment, and knowing "this is this," where do they come from? Therefore, it is said that this should come from the difference between abandoning and not abandoning afflictions. The things that abandon and do not abandon afflictions are the abandonment and non-abandonment of afflictions themselves, and this is the difference. Among them, the abandonment of afflictions itself is the eradication of the seeds of afflictions from the root, so that afflictions will no longer arise.

The very abandonment, if the seeds of afflictions are not eradicated from the root, there is still a possibility that afflictions will arise. Thus, even if one possesses a worldly mind, those who have no seeds, and therefore are of a nature that afflictions will never arise, are noble ones. And those whose seeds have not been severed, and therefore will still arise, are ordinary beings, thus the establishment is accomplished. Attainment here is only the seed. Therefore, not wasting attainment is also the seed itself, know that this is its meaning. Here too, how does it transform, and so on. Like this, among noble ones and ordinary beings, from where is it known that these have abandoned afflictions, and these have not abandoned afflictions? Because there is not even a slight sign to recognize the abandonment and non-abandonment of afflictions. Therefore, because one cannot recognize the abandonment and non-abandonment of afflictions themselves, the establishment that these are noble ones with worldly minds, and these are ordinary beings, is meaningless. If there is attainment, then the statement that these have abandoned afflictions, and these have not abandoned afflictions, will be established. How is it established? Therefore, it is said, from separation and non-separation, those who do not possess the attainment of afflictions in their continuum, and have severed them, are those who have abandoned afflictions. Those who have not separated and have not severed them in their continuum are those who have not abandoned afflictions. Aren't some ordinary beings also the same as noble ones, having severed the attainment of afflictions? To this, if it is said that it is severed through the path, then how are noble ones and ordinary beings established? Because it is severed through the path of contaminated and uncontaminated. And how is it known? Because the attainment of severance of contaminated and uncontaminated is different. This can be established from the difference of the basis, that is, these have abandoned afflictions, and these have not abandoned afflictions. Here, the basis is the five aggregates. Others say that it is the nature of mind and mental factors. The difference of the basis of noble ones and ordinary beings, and those who have abandoned and not abandoned afflictions, is for the sake of showing.
