Those two, intention and formlessness, are non-existent. Therefore, joy and respect are absent. Faith and conscientiousness are said to increase extensively. Joy and respect are the nature of faith and conscientiousness. Since faith and conscientiousness are the ground for many virtues, obstructing formlessness is contradictory. If it is said so, faith is of two kinds, etc., extensively explained. There, faith and conscientiousness that focus on individuals are obstructed, but those that focus on the Dharma are not, so there is no contradiction. From where does this come? It comes from the context. To have joy and respect for individuals is the context. Therefore, here, those joys and respects are contemplated. It is said that whatever faith and conscientiousness focus on individuals, they are, but not those that focus on the Dharma. Regarding investigation and analysis, etc., it is extensively explained. How can those two exist in one mind? If it is said so, since their own nature is not shown, it is not another mind. It is also not that one mind has both coarse and subtle aspects, because they contradict each other. If it is said so, some say, etc., extensively explained. To throw into ghee, earth, and water, etc., is a synonym for transformation. Because of investigation, analysis, and following, the mind does not become too coarse or too subtle. This is an analogy and the Dharma are similar. Not too cold means not too dense. Not too digestible means not too melted. Their own nature is not, meaning the nature of coarse and subtle is not. If investigation and analysis are the coarseness and subtlety of the mind, this is shown from the aspect of function, not from the aspect of its own nature. This is acknowledged, therefore the fault of becoming a reason does not transform here. Thus, the sutra says, any consciousness, whether coarse or subtle. Therefore, whatever Dharma there is, the arising of a coarse mind is investigation, and whatever arises subtly is analysis. In that way, earth and mind are in one

Coarseness and subtlety are both unreasonable because they contradict each other. The teacher Dusang says: Focusing on one mind, with the same substance, but different times of strength, there is no contradiction. If the power of thought in the aggregate is greater, then because analysis weakens, the mind becomes coarse. If the power of analysis is greater, then because the power of thought weakens, it becomes subtle, like salt and cold water. Here, whichever power is greater is like salt; whichever is smaller is like water, so there is no inconsistency. Thus, thought and analysis are one, and the coarseness of the mind itself is not bad. Coarseness and subtlety arise from the difference of ground and aspect. Among them, due to the difference of ground, the manifest accumulation is large, so relative to the first dhyana, the desire realm is coarse; because the accumulation is small, relative to the desire realm, the first dhyana is subtle and very subtle. Similarly, relative to the second dhyana, the first dhyana is coarse; the second dhyana is subtle relative to the first dhyana. It should be said similarly up to the peak of existence. The difference of aspect is that even the same ground is divided from small, medium, and large, etc., back into small, etc. Thus, up to the peak of existence, thought and analysis will exist. The difference of ground is that in the desire realm there is only thought, at the peak of existence there is only analysis, and in between there are both. The difference of aspect is that both exist in all grounds, but it is not that they exist only in the desire realm and the first dhyana. Similarly, showing thought and analysis from the aspect of result, because it is the cause relative to the coarseness and subtlety of the mind and other minds, it will become thought and analysis. Or, thought and analysis do not change from the peak of existence, but are only the desire realm and the first dhyana. If the power of thought in the aggregate is greater, it is coarse; if the power of analysis is greater, it is subtle. When it becomes coarse or subtle, it is not relative to the difference of time and aspect, but it itself becomes subtle, it itself becomes coarse. The teacher
