Therefore, others say that one will also rejoice beforehand. These four statements are not contradictory, because one also rejoices from the ultimate truth. Faith that focuses on suffering and its origin is only faith, not joy, because it focuses on what is not manifest desire. Joy towards sons and wives, etc., is not faith, because it is afflicted, and faith is the basis of many virtues. The case where it is both is faith that is both joy and faith, namely, faith that focuses on cessation and the path. What is called neither is neither faith nor joy. What is called not including these types means not including these types, namely, faith that focuses on suffering, its origin, cessation, and the path, and attachment that focuses on sons, etc., not including those dharmas that are combined with other mental functions, etc. A disciple related to the Dharma, etc., is a co-resident. One related to receiving knowledge, etc., is a close attendant. What is called not including these types means without relationship, without qualities, and whatever other world, for which there is neither joy nor disrespect. Others think that thinking there are qualities is faith, and through it joy arises, therefore joy is the result of faith, not faith itself. Others say that reverence is widely present, and the result of reverence is shame, which is knowing shame, not reverence itself. For these people, knowing shame arises from reverence, and it is impossible for shame to arise before reverence with reverence. That both are in the desire and form realms is established for the purpose of clearly grasping, and for that very reason, it is said that there is no joy and reverence in the formless realm. If asked, what is the reason for not having them? The answer is because there is no basis for joy and reverence, and there is no cause for them. The basis is teachers and students, etc. Among them, students have joy and reverence for teachers, while teachers only have joy for students, not reverence. The cause is pure actions of body and speech and familiarity.
