The so-called "diligence" refers to the mind being without laziness in order to protect and abandon the merits and faults that have already arisen, and to generate the merits that have not yet arisen and prevent the faults that have already arisen from arising. If one has it, the mind will strive and become excellent, that is diligence. Here, the word "and" means to include weariness and joy. Weariness refers to the good mind being oppressed by many harms, closely showing that aversion that is in accordance with detachment. If it is in accordance with it, it is called contemplating renunciation. Joy refers to the fact that one will definitely find an antidote to extract from harming the good mind, and the mind is completely satisfied by realizing it. For those who are inseparable from joy, such as those who are incapable, etc., whatever is in accordance with it is called contemplating joy. These two cannot exist in one mind because they are contradictory, because it is not suitable to be the basis of many good dharmas, and it is not explained in the discussion. Because the happiness of the mind can also enter in the form of weariness, but joy does not have the form of weariness. Therefore, two "and" words appear, because they are established for two groups. These are called the basis of many afflictions, which refers to only showing those minds that are in accordance with them in the way of afflictions. Therefore, it is said that those who always appear in the mind with afflictions. Among them, ignorance is ignorance. What is this ignorance? It is not understanding. What is this not understanding? It is not clear. What is this not clear? Clarity is wisdom, therefore, the obstacle to knowing objects of knowledge as they are, the dharma with the characteristic of unclearness, is called ignorance. Negligence is not cultivating good dharmas, and one should understand that "if there is something" is included in it. Not cultivating good dharmas means not making the unobtained manifest. The opposite of cultivation is abandoning cherishing things that are beneficial to oneself, which is a synonym. Laziness is the mind not

The so-called "joy" refers to the joy towards virtuous actions, hence it is said to be the opposite of diligence. If this is done, the joy that arises towards non-virtuous actions is not diligence. It is a cause of laziness of the same kind, therefore it is called diminished diligence. Because it tends towards diminishing, it is laziness, and its nature is laziness itself. The so-called lack of faith refers to the mind's lack of faith, which is a similar cause of wrong views. Because of the lack of truth, the Three Jewels, and samadhi, there is no belief in offerings and other near-abidings and their results, and no faith arises, which is lack of faith. Therefore, it is said to be the opposite of faith. Regarding the widespread saying of "lethargy and agitation," I think the first two words are explanations, and the last two words are expressions. The heaviness of mind produced by opposition and displeasure is lethargy. If it is grasped by it, it will become like foolishness, and the mind will become incapable. Therefore, this is called the opposite of pliancy. Regarding "the feeling of the body is also the same," because it arises depending on the colored root, so like the mind, it is said "of the body." Similarly, although the five aggregates of consciousness are only of the mind, because they depend on the colored root, they are said to be "of the body." Others say that because the great elements can produce it, the mind precedes the body, and the heaviness of the body is also expressed by lethargy, but lethargy is not the object of the body's consciousness. The way to distinguish lethargy from sleep is: the mind being incapable is lethargy, and the mind clearly gathering is sleep. The so-called agitation refers to the mind not being tranquil, the mind not being tranquil arising from desire-driven discrimination, etc., and being associated with it will lead to straying, which is agitation. Regarding the widespread saying in the Dharma Skandha Sutra, there is forgetfulness, distraction, non-awareness, and irrationality.
