Although there are many, if one wishes to speak concisely, they can be summarized into five categories. What are these five? Phenomena are of two types: those with form and those without form. Among these, formless phenomena can be divided into four categories, thus becoming five. Why are they divided into five categories? It is to refute wrong conceptions. To refute the clinging to form, etc., the arising and the difference between what arises from arising are explained. To those who think that mind and mental factors are not different in meaning, it will be explained: mind and mental factors together. To those who think that attainment and so on do not exist, it will be explained: non-associated formations. To those who think that the unconditioned is not a substance, it will be explained: separation is the exhaustion of wisdom. In this way, this teaching will refute those wrong conceptions and will also clearly elucidate its own tenets. Among these, for the unconditioned, the saying that there is no arising will occur, therefore, there is no possibility of thinking of necessarily arising together. Regarding the statement "phenomena with form," phenomena with form are of two types: non-sensory atoms and non-atoms. Atoms are also of two types: those that operate in the desire realm and those that operate in the form realm. Those that operate in the desire realm are also of two types: those without sense organs and those with sense organs. Those that operate in the form realm are also only of two types, similar to that. This is the certainty, which is a summary of all that will be explained. Among these, first of all, the desire realm is without sense organs, the eight subtle substances without sound. It will be explained in detail. Regarding the statement "the form accumulated from all subtle particles is called an atom," there are two types of atoms: substance atoms and accumulated atoms. Among these, the substance atom is the part of form that is extremely subtle and has obstruction, which is another form, or even cannot be completely distinguished by wisdom. Precisely because of this, it has no parts, so it is called the limit of form, just as an indivisible moment is the limit of time.

The aggregate of subtle particles is the component of a collection that has no other aggregate smaller than it, and which cannot be destroyed by other substances. If it is argued that because it is an aggregate substance, it should not arise, is that not so? The answer is: aggregates do arise, so it is said. What then? In the desire realm, eight substances, excluding the subtle particles of the senses and sound, arise without being interconnected. Thus it is said that eight substances arise. It is shown that none of them are lacking. Others also presume that subtle particles of form and so on are manifest substances. That is because in the desire realm, eight substances, separate from sound and the senses, arise without being connected. Mentioning the desire realm is to exclude the form realm, because there is no smell or taste there, so it must be determined to arise in a different way. Regarding the term "having the body sense," it is combined with subtle particles, like something with a cycle. That is because nine substances necessarily arise together, since the body sense exists apart from the eyes and so on. Regarding the term "having other senses, being ten substances," any aggregate that has other things like eyes is the tenth substance, because the eyes and so on do not arise without the body sense, and they function differently from each other. Those subtle particles, together with sound, arise in detail, where the one without a sense is the ninth. The one with the body sense is the tenth substance. The one with other senses is the eleventh substance, and they sometimes may also be without sound, because sound arises from the striking of elements, so it is not constant like form and so on. Therefore, it is said, "If those subtle particles arise together with sound." For that very reason, because there was concern that the sound not different from the sense was not noticed, it was elaborated, "There is also sound not different from the sense," just as the elements are not different, because they necessarily arise together, so the senses are not different, just as milk and water cannot be distinguished from each other, that is the final conclusion. Therefore, how can
