One might wonder with doubt! If so, is it just doubt? Is it virtuous or non-virtuous, or unspecified? The eight unspecified ones themselves, there is the saying "except for form and sound," and the saying "life is maturation," and the saying "maturation is unspecified," therefore there will be no doubt. In the saying "except for the stainless, belongs to desire," the saying "all faculties belong to desire" is a general statement, and "except for the stainless" is a specific exclusion for this. In that case, it is established that the remainder other than the stainless belongs to desire. The reason stated for excluding the stainless faculty is that it is only non-associated. However, the word "also" is "stainless also," which is the meaning of subsequent guidance, connected to "except." "Suffering etc." refers to suffering and displeasure, and because the two are inconsistent, they are expressed with one word. In the form realm, there are the male, female, and displeasure faculties, and the remaining faculties except for the three uncontaminated ones mentioned earlier. Saying "because it is not beautiful" refers to those whose hidden parts of the genitals are submerged in the recesses. Why is it not beautiful? Therefore, being submerged is good, says the collection of scholars. Here, seeing it as having male characteristics, the question is, if there is no male faculty, then how are they called male? Because the question is asked illogically, the question is, from where does it arise? So, what is the nature of male, in the desire realm, that exists other than the male faculty? That is there. That is a collection of sound, movement, and shape, and in the desire realm, it is seen to move together with the male faculty, but not to move together with the female faculty. Others say that it is because there is the action of a male who necessarily arises from being free from desire. This is the same for the female faculty. It is widely said that there is no faculty of suffering. If the faculty of suffering arises from striking or from maturation, then because there is a body, there is no arising from striking.

Since there is no unwholesomeness, there is also no feeling born from maturation. Regarding "there is no unpleasant feeling," etc., will that then become something produced by cause and something produced by condition? If so, then there is no production by cause, because the continuum is moistened by calm abiding. That is to say, because the samadhi of calm abiding is free from anger. There is no roughness in their continuum, therefore there is also no unpleasant feeling that has it as its cause. The roughness that exists in the continuum is anger. Therefore, it should be understood that there is no unpleasantness produced by one's own rough mind there. Because there is no basis for universal torment, it should be understood that there is no production by condition there. Universal torment is extreme disturbance. Its basis is the object. Therefore, it should be understood that there is no unpleasantness produced by the object, because there are no nine bases of torment there. Those nine bases are: I have harmed, am harming, and will harm, these are the three bases of torment. I have harmed a friend, am harming, and will harm, these are the other three. I have benefited an enemy, am benefiting, and will benefit, these are the other three. Others say that these are not afflictive. Others say that because they are accomplished by ignorance, those who are free from desire are not endowed with wisdom, therefore there is no unpleasantness there. In the widely occurring "included in the formless realm," the "sound of nature" is connected with the male and female faculties and suffering, etc., and with "immaculate," because it is timely, so it is connected with "except." "Pleasure" refers to pleasure and pleasantness, because they are the same in terms of benefiting, so both are expressed with one word. By mentioning form, the five faculties such as the eye are included. If it is said that by mentioning form, are the two faculties of male and female not also included? If it is said that by merely mentioning form, just like the eye, etc., the two faculties of male and female are also excluded, then,
