However, because of not understanding that, it is explained by other famous terms in the scriptures, such as the feeling that is neither suffering nor happiness, and so on. Like happiness and suffering, because they depend on the body and mind, and are shown separately like that, when hesitating, one asks: Is it of the body or of the mind? This is in accordance with the root of equanimity. Therefore, it is said that it is of both, meaning of the body and mind. In the case of the root of equanimity, the question of "why" also arises extensively. Happiness and suffering have different roots because they have different bases. But here, without respecting the difference in bases, but summarizing and meditating, unifying the root into one, what is the reason for this? If it is said that the Tathagatas, because they possess unobstructed wisdom towards everything, and have close intentions towards everything, do not teach the Dharma without a reason, then, therefore, it is said "because of non-discrimination." The reason for unifying the root after summarizing is: the happiness and suffering of the mind mostly arise from discrimination, this is widely stated. Saying "mostly" is because the joy of happiness arises from Samadhi, and not from discrimination, and from maturation, arising from the power of the object, and mental happiness arising from maturation, even in equanimity there is no displeasure. In order to abandon these, it shows "for this reason." For the happiness and suffering of the body that do not arise from discrimination, the reason is given: by the power of the object, etc., from the proximity of the object, it always arises, and when objects are gathered, there is no ability to discriminate. For the Arhats who have abandoned the discrimination of lovable and unlovable, it is also certain to arise because of the object being lovable and unlovable. Therefore, for those, the happiness and suffering of the body and mind, the root of pleasure, the root of suffering, the root of joy, the root of sorrow, the roots themselves are different. Equanimity is of the body or of the mind, or discriminating

Whether arising from maturity or from a similar cause, it is only non-conceptual thought that arises naturally, without any contrivance. Therefore, they are regarded as one root. Bodily pleasure is also widely referred to as benefiting others. Bodily pleasure and pain are transient, existing in the body and mind, capable of benefiting and harming the body and mind. Bodily pleasure and pain are intense, rapid, and continuous, whereas mental pleasure and pain are not. Mental fulfillment of desires and painful discriminations can benefit or harm for a short time. Equanimity is such that bodily equanimity benefits others, and mental equanimity also benefits others, without such a distinction. Therefore, there is no difference in equanimity, and there is no difference between the roots of body and mind. Some say that where there are different consciousness and body, mental pleasure and pain are unstable. The pleasure of the body itself is neither pleasure nor pain, and there is no difference from not having them, so it is the only stable one, so it is one root. Others say that bodily pleasure is given to friends, and mental pain is given to enemies. Similarly, neither pleasure nor pain is given to those in between. Therefore, for the intermediate aspect, there is no difference in equanimity, so different roots are not shown, they think. Now entering the category of the unpolluted. For these, although there is nothing that needs to be shown separately, the paths of seeing, cultivation, and no-more-learning have nine. It is said that in the three paths, the nine roots are the root of knowing everything, etc. Do the roots of knowing everything, etc., not become nominally existent like a vase? They do not become so. The meaning of dominating is the meaning of the root, and the aggregates also each dominate. The consciousness that initially exists on the path of seeing, etc., is the mind root. The three feeling roots, such as pleasure, are appropriately the sixth from the paths of seeing and cultivation.
