This is not dependent on separate teachings, just like eye consciousness and so on. For the moment, what exactly are these senses? If words arise from them, then thoughts and considerations, and the winds that completely arouse them, would also become its senses. If it arises dependent on the throat, tongue, lips, and so on, then thoughts and so on are the main things because they completely arouse them. Hands and feet are also because they are nothing other than taking and walking, so it is said that the hand itself taking place in different situations is taking, and the foot itself taking place in different situations is walking. Because for it, it is not momentary, so there is no going to another place, and there is no becoming another action meaning. Therefore, taking and walking are not other than hands and feet. Therefore, it is not possible to control it now, and it is not permissible to control oneself. For snakes and so on, snakes and so on do not have the senses of hands and feet, but even so, they bear and walk with their chests. Similarly, it should be said for fish and so on as well. The buttocks are also not the senses for defecation, but for discarding impurities. That is because the wind can also make it flow. It is said that it is for making the impurities flow. Because some people see feces being excreted from the mouth as well. In that case, one should look for the classification of the senses. Because bearing and speaking are for discarding, and for taking and walking with both hands. Similarly, also with both feet. Universal joy is the joy of affliction. Therefore, it is said that that joy is produced by the senses of male and female. If it is said that that is the penis, then the sense of the penis is not other than the sense of the body, because the senses of male and female are one part of the sense of the body. Because there are no other two action meanings, just like ignorance and so on, purity and so on are not senses. Therefore, it should not be supplemented.

If it is not considered in this way, then things like hidden places would also become faculties because they can function in relation to objects and so on, as many as there are, because there is no determining reason. All things that are causes, such as seeds and sprouts, would also become faculties because they can function in relation to their own function, which is the nature of decorating sprouts, leaves, and tadpole eyes. Furthermore, do you consider these twenty-two faculties to be real or imputed? Because it is said that they function, they are definitely real. Others say that there are eleven real entities, because the female and male faculties are included within the body faculty, and faith and so on, as well as mind, pleasure, mental pleasure, and equanimity, are all included within the three all-knowing faculties, because their opposites have become faith and so on, and mind and so on. Others say that there are twenty. The meaning of the faculties and the reason for their distinct establishment have been explained. Now, their own nature is to be stated. Among them, the parts from the eye and so on up to the male faculty have already been explained, as it is said, "The basis of their consciousness, the eye and so on, are combined with form," and "From the body, the male and female faculties." Pleasure and so on, and the all-knowing faculty and so on, are to be explained below. If pleasure and so on are also mind-born, shouldn't they be explained from among the mind-born phenomena, just like faith and so on? No, because in the mind-born phenomena, "feeling, mind, and attention" are spoken of in a general way. Therefore, it is precisely here that the time has come to show the nature of their differences, so it is shown in this chapter on faculties. If the nature of mind has already been explained, and faith and so on will be explained from the diseases of the mind-born phenomena, and pleasure, mental pleasure, and equanimity will be explained from here, then what is there to be said about the three all-knowing faculties and so on, other than those? That is because there are no others. So what is it? In what state of difference are these superior? All-knowing
