Eyes and so on rely on the effects of eye medicine and dust, etc., to produce benefits and harm. Similarly, because clarity and unclearness arise, they also transform into the nature of clarity and unclearness. Therefore, it should be understood that when eyes and so on change, consciousness also changes accordingly. The change of forms, etc., does not cause their change, because forms, etc., do not change according to benefit and harm, clarity and unclearness. For example, even with forms, etc., people with impaired vision see white conch shells as yellow. If harmed by cataracts, etc., one sees forms changing. Similarly, if the eyes are unclear, even if the form is complete with its own characteristics, the consciousness of the eyes becomes unclear. Therefore, if the eyes are clear, even if the form is unclear, its consciousness arises clearly. Here, the meaning of dependence is the meaning of following. The so-called "very good" means "the best." When the body is disturbed or purified by wind, etc., disturbed and undisturbed consciousness arises, but that is not its basis. Even if it exists, it follows. If it is said that way, then at that time, it is also following its own basis. If suffering arises in someone's body, then along with the feeling of suffering, all the disturbed consciousness of the body ceases, and in that very continuum, disturbed consciousness of mind arises. Conversely, undisturbed consciousness arises. Therefore, that is following the mind itself. If it follows its own basis, then how can uncontaminated consciousness arise from contaminated consciousness? Because all contaminated dharmas do not become a basis, because that would become without a basis. Otherwise, from an unindicated eye, the consciousness of the eye arises, called virtuous and non-virtuous. Thinking that it should be called by the action of consciousness itself, and contemplating and questioning, that is, "and why again," etc., appear extensively. Because the meaning of dependence has already been explained, it is a question that is different from the common.

Furthermore, how is it that it is a non-common nature? Because another's eye is not another itself, but the distinction of kinds belonging to one's own continuum, the mind consciousness and the eye consciousness, although they are of the same kind, are because the basis of sentient beings is different. It is the same between bodies as well. And, it refers to smells and so on, because they encounter objects, they are spoken of as being under the power of existence, and they become the objects of other color and so on consciousnesses. For example, like the sound of a large drum and the sprout of barley. The arising of sound and sprout depends on many causes, but the drum and barley are not common in nature and are the basis, so it is said to be the sound of the drum, the sprout of barley, and they are indicated by those. Sticks and so on, and water and so on, are common to the sounds of drums, patahas, and so on, and the sprouts of rice and so on, so they are not indicated by those. However, it is possible to indicate the sound of a large drum, the sprout of barley. Similarly, here too, it is possible to indicate from eye consciousness to mind consciousness, but not by objects and so on. Although this is the case, what is the purpose of placing eye consciousness in the second position? It is for the purpose of knowing by its non-common nature. If even those of the same kind become the basis of other consciousnesses, what need is there to mention those of different kinds? If, because of the non-common nature, form and so on are blocked, then because the basis is blocked, is the near attainment not meaningless? Because for the object of mind consciousness, other consciousnesses are non-common. Those are not mind consciousness

The ascertainment of pride is also not common. The same should be said for other sense faculties as well. If a mind consciousness arising in a different birth place arises in a different birth place, although it arises, it is not the case that one arises simultaneously in multiple birth places. It is like with form and so on. Therefore, because it follows the basis and because of mutual determination, consciousnesses arise only from the bases, not from the objects of the bases. Others say: because the two are of an inner nature. Others say: because the two are counted as sentient beings, therefore they are different from form and so on. Although eye consciousness is composed of many causes and conditions, why only mention the two? Because in terms of the nature of the basis and the object, they are the closest causes and conditions. Even if there is no appearance, for beings that walk at night, and beings that walk in water without sky, and when separated by pearls, coral, and crystal, eye consciousness and the two are not complete, but when possessing the divine eye, eye consciousness arises, like this it is impossible that eye and form and so on do not exist. Attention is also a common cause for generating the six aggregates of consciousness, eye and form and so on are not like this. Therefore, it is beautiful to only mention these two. The realms were also taught according to the inclinations of those to be tamed. Mentioning attention and so on also refers to things like the footprints of an elephant and so on. Also, regarding the question, "Where does the body reside?" "Where" refers to belonging to the desire realm, or the first dhyana, or the second, or the third, or the fourth ground. "If the body" and so on. If the body belongs to the desire realm, then are eye, form, and consciousness and so on also only belonging to the desire realm? Similarly, if the body is the fourth dhyana ground, then are eye, form, and consciousness and so on also between up to the fourth dhyana ground? Or if the body belongs to the desire realm, then are eye, form, and consciousness and so on other, similarly, if the body is the fourth dhyana ground, then are eye, form, and consciousness and so on also between other grounds? There is no mutual determination among the four.
