The ultimate atoms do not touch each other; they are mental contacts. Regarding "because of the cause," whether it is touching or not touching, whatever is the cause of anything, that is its cause, hence it is said "because of the cause." Sometimes the phrase "by the cause of not touching" expands, when the accumulated ultimate atoms remain unbroken, then by the cause of not touching, there is no touching. When the ultimate atoms accumulate, then by the cause of not touching, there is touching. When there is accumulation with aggregation, that is aggregation, when the aggregated things aggregate, then by the cause of touching, there is touching, for example, the dust in sunlight, usually the second moment of not meeting is the cause of not meeting, this is called mental contact of not touching each other. The fellow student Gathering Good says, coarse things are spoken of as touching the subtle in terms of aggregation. Its cause is that for coarse things, it is said that by the cause of not touching, there is touching, and this is not a fault. When here, the conditions of that form aggregate, not contradicting the wind element that holds it, and when the opposite arises from it, then by the cause of touching, not touching arises, the coarse is the cause of aggregation, this is a synonym for the so-called subtle. For this very reason, the wind element that holds the dust in the sunlight has not arisen, because it does not exist, and because it is subtle, it is said that for the aggregated things, it is not touched by the cause of not touching. Therefore, I think the intention here is this. The Vaibhashikas explain the cause of not touching, if the self touches everything, it will be mixed. It is impossible for things to touch in an instant, therefore they are not respected. For things that contradict holding the moment, the cause is said, that is, the moment will remain behind, the moment of touching is later than the moment of arising, because they touch each other as soon as they obtain themselves. The moment also does not remain behind, therefore it does not touch because it has stopped at the time of touching. Touching arises like clothes, even if there is no moment remaining behind, it does not contradict the cause of different objects, one should think like this.

It is merely the perception that there is contact with an obstruction. If someone asks, "What is the difference between this and the view of the Vaibhashikas?" The answer is: This view not only asserts that form is real, but also that space is real. The venerable ones assert this view, while the Vaibhashikas do not. If someone says, "The sutras say 'the cause itself is not like that,'" etc., then, if the venerable ones believe that space exists even between atoms, then "in the gaps" means in places not obstructed by other forms. Obstruction to movement is an obstacle, so if there are gaps between atoms, then the nature of being accompanied by obstacles will disappear, which is unreasonable. The elder Bhadanta says: One should not be attached to or hate the views of the venerable ones, but should study them. If there is no gap at all between these atoms, then they will either have parts or occupy the same location. Since it is impossible to avoid the previous faults, how can one agree with the views of the venerable ones? Furthermore, someone objects: Since aggregates have parts, they will come into contact. The answer to this is: It is usually said that "they are accumulated from atoms," so just as atoms depend on each other to form form, only the accumulation of atoms is contacted, not the aggregates, because there is no difference between aggregates and atoms. Therefore, atoms will mix, and the fault of having parts lies in the aggregates themselves. If someone says: If contact is made through one direction, then it will lead to having parts, the explanation for this is: If one thinks that atoms have different directions, then many problems will arise. Different directions mean different directions, for example, east is different from west, and up is different from down. In this way, since there are different directions, not only will contact occur, but non-contact will also lead to having parts. If it is not understood in different directions, then even if there is contact, it will not lead to having parts, but only to having parts, but not to occupying the same location. To speak of distinguishing directions is to speak of having parts.
