Then, what is the basis for saying that consciousness knows form through consciousness? If there is no other activity apart from consciousness, then it is said that consciousness merely exists. It cannot be said that the eye sees merely by being close, because there are eyes that are similar to it. Consciousness is not like that; merely by its existence, it is said that consciousness knows form, just as the sun makes the day appear. Like this, the place of appearance for the continents is the daytime, and that is only the sun with light, there is nothing else. Therefore, the sun's existence makes the day appear. Or, if the eye sees because it is the basis of seeing, but it is not seeing because it is the basis of consciousness, and only the mind knows, then there will be no fault of becoming consciousness. The Blessed One also said that consciousness knows through consciousness, but the eye and so on have a nature different from consciousness, even so, the similar, immediately past consciousness becomes the basis of other consciousnesses, therefore the present eye consciousness and so on will not become the function of knowing, because only the past, in terms of true meaning, there is no other consciousness except for the function of consciousness that is not present. Consciousness merely exists and knows form, this is a term of imputation. Or, when explaining that seeing is based on the basis of seeing, the basis of ear consciousness, at some times, when the immediately past of eye consciousness becomes past, it will become that it knows the door, therefore it is said that consciousness and so on. At the time of ear consciousness, eye consciousness is not close, therefore it is also said that merely by existing it knows form, therefore eye consciousness will not have the fault of becoming knowing sound. This is the eye sees. Consciousness knows through consciousness, what is the intention in this? Others say that there, seeing and

When explaining the various distinctions of consciousness, in order to elaborate on their differences, it is said: Because it serves as the basis for seeing, one sees with the eye. They say that merely because of existence, consciousness cognizes with consciousness, but it is not with this (eye) that one sees. To this, the Sutra masters say, in the case of "Does the eye see or does consciousness see?" What do they say? "Why wave one's fist in the air?" meaning that this kind of analysis is like waving one's fist in the air, it is unnecessary. And how is it said that this kind of analysis is unnecessary? Therefore, in the extensively appearing "relying on the eye and form," it will be shown in this way: If the existence of the effect precedes the existence of the cause, then who is the one who sees it, who is the seer? If one cannot be convinced by mere words, therefore it is said "this has no function" etc. "Having no function" refers to the contradictory action that is different from the existence of the cause. If one admits an action different from this, it will harm the momentary destruction, then the existence of things after a moment contradicts the valid means of cognition. "Merely dharma" refers to preventing the agent of inner action. Although there is no action of the cause and no agent of inner action, the causal relationship between cause and effect is not contradictory, in order to show this, it is said "merely cause and effect." "For the sake of establishing conventions" refers to in the world and in the treatises. "Through the way of intention" refers to showing that it is not through the name of the meaning. Do not be attached to this, because the meaning of conventions is imputed. If one searches in ultimate truth, it is not found. The Blessed One said that one should not be attached to the meaning of conventions, indicating that the Blessed One has prohibited this attachment. "Do not be attached to the definitive words of the people of a region," the people of a region and the determination of the people of a region, that is, the definitive words that are determined. Why should one not be attached to "this is determined by this" etc., why?

Therefore, this is a definite word, but do not think that everything has meaning, that is its meaning. Do not excessively pursue worldly names, meaning that thinking and excessively pursuing are the same thing. Others say that there is a "self" that is different from the body, etc., but through untrue fabrications, do not excessively cling to worldly sayings such as "self" and "life," because there is no meaning, so do not establish names either, that is its meaning. Is this the assertion of the Kashmir Vaibhashikas? This is because in the Kashmir Vaibhashikas, the time has come to explain the famous Abhidharma, therefore they themselves are in the position of outsiders. If one eye is closed, since it has been determined that both eyes can see anything, then why analyze "one eye" in detail? Because it has not been analyzed whether what is seen by opening both eyes is gradual or simultaneous, therefore effort is made to determine the object. This is uncertain, meaning that some people think that if any one eye is closed or damaged, it will harm the vision of the other eye. The eyes can see things, but the closed or damaged eyes cannot. Both eyes see simultaneously, but the word "also" does not definitely indicate only these two eyes or only one eye. This is because it is seen clearly. Mentioning the Abhidharma is to show that some Sutra masters also think that they can see. Like this, explaining in detail "if you open both eyes," if you close one eye, it is not clear what continuously appears, when you open both eyes, you can see very clearly. If you only see with one eye, then there is no difference in what is seen before and after. If any one changes, then it is not, meaning that if the open eye is half-closed, or the half-closed eye is fully opened, or fully closed, it will not be thought that there are two moons.
