It is understood as "O." There, regarding the statement "seeing is called a door," in the Sutra Pitaka, whatever is seen is the function of the eye, and seeing is called a door. Therefore, only the eye can see, not the eye consciousness. If the meanings of the words "door" and "seeing" are not different, then it is not allowed here because the expression is meaningless. Why? Because it would be said, "To see various things with the eye is seeing." If seeing various things, then seeing things themselves becomes the door, then what becomes the door when seeing other things? The sutra says, "The mind is the door to knowing all dharmas." There, only the past mind becomes the object of reliance for consciousness, so it is called a door. Because the past mind does not have the ability to fully understand all dharmas. Similarly, here, because the eye is the basis for seeing things, the eye is called a door, but it does not have the ability to see, because it is obstructive. The Venerable Sanghabhadra says: Because the sutra says, "The mind knows all dharmas," therefore the intention here is to rely on it, that is the meaning. However, this cannot be established. Because they are of the same kind. Because from its definition, consciousness is also because of the mind itself. If consciousness is spoken of, then there will be no contradiction in the definition. Because the mind completely abandons speech, or rather, the consciousness of past actions has no ability to initiate the actions of body and speech, while the present consciousness is not like this, so the mind itself is completely established. Then, why does the Sutra Pitaka consider only becoming the basis of consciousness, such as the eyes, etc., and not all? Because things with a basis do not have seeing. Therefore, it should be known that for it, only the mind becoming the basis of consciousness is clearly recognized, not all. Moreover, only the past mind can become the basis, not the unborn and the presently arising mind. How is this, it is not its own proof? Because here, apart from the previous thought

Therefore, all the answers given to refute become irrelevant. What is said is: If the act of seeing is not well-known from consciousness, is it not unreasonable to establish it on that basis? The answer is: That is also unreasonable, because it is very well-known. Why is it that in the world, seeing is spoken of as perceiving form through the gate of the eye? Although the eye exists, there is nothing seen. Consciousness is not like that; it should be known that only consciousness is called seeing. Brahmin, the eye is a gate. The meaning of these words has been explained by the Venerable Sanghabhadra. Because they are very difficult to distinguish and because of the fear of extensive texts, they have not been thoroughly examined. If consciousness sees, by what does it know? If it is like the eye seeing, then consciousness sees form. If the term "consciousness" can be established, then if it is like consciousness seeing, there would be no other consciousness, and the term would become nonexistent. What is the difference between seeing and consciousness? The word "by what" will be extensively explained: that which perceives form and sees is itself consciousness. If the object is seen, then will the object also be seen in sounds and so on? The answer is: The initial object is considered to be seeing consciousness, but not all objects. For example, the term "seeing" is extensively used for some wisdoms, such as the eight aspects of seeing, which are both seeing and superior knowledge, while others are only superior knowledge. Similarly, eye consciousness is both seeing and consciousness, while ear consciousness and so on are only consciousness. Wisdom is of the nature of conception, and because there is no seeing in it, it is not appropriate to call it seeing. Is it not inappropriate for some consciousnesses to have differences due to the difference in the nature of the object, so that some cannot be manifestly seen as selfless? The answer is: Consciousness also has differences in the nature of the object that can be shown, so this is the same, and the difference has already been shown before. Others say that if the eye sees, and so on.

Regarding this, when the eyes are opened, is there any other similar function besides consciousness that is referred to as "seeing"? If there is no function, then the agent itself is also unreasonable, just like walking. They say that. This is intolerable because (this statement) would expand. If consciousness is called consciousness, then for consciousness, there is no distinction between the agent and the action, because there is no action of consciousness other than consciousness. Similarly, here too, because there is no action other than the agent, "the eye sees" becomes indicative of the agent. If it is the same here, it is not so, because in all cases, it only indicates the action of things. For example, just as it is said that a shadow moves or does not move, consciousness also, from its own causes, wherever it arises, it generates the image of that place, and although there is no other action than generating, it itself is called "knowing the object." Others say, "Seeing is the consciousness of the eye," and so on. "Seeing is looking," and so on. Because it is its basis. "The eye is the basis of the consciousness of the eye," and so on, just like the agent in action, the most famous example also applies to the eye. Therefore, it should be said, "The eye sees." For example, "Because it is the basis of proclamation," and so on, this is speaking of a famous example in the world. If that is the case, for the word "eye," if it is said, "Because it is the basis of seeing, the eye sees," then, if that is the case, it would become, "Because it is the basis of consciousness, the eye is conscious." But it will not become that, because the terms of agent and action are worldly. In the world, consciousness is called seeing, and this is widely proclaimed. From the *Vibhajyavāda*, this is widely proclaimed, which shows that not only in the world, but also in the treatises, it is said to be seeing. Meeting with the eye means that the eye looks at it and it appears, which means that it has become the entity of the object. If it is said, "Because it is the basis of seeing, the eye sees," and so on.
