From the Holy Extensive Play Sutra: The suffering of old age and disease blazes in the three realms of existence. The fire of death blazes fiercely, and there is no protector here. Sentient beings are always ignorant of arising from existence, like a bee trapped in a jar. Thus it is said. Therefore, all sentient beings of the three realms of existence do not know the means of arising from existence and find it difficult to enter, but they naturally enter into the cause of cyclic existence. Therefore, I shall attain the wisdom of omniscience and place all beings in the great enlightenment. Thus I think. And that wisdom of omniscience is also said to be obtained from the practice of calm abiding and insight. It is said in the Holy Sutra Unraveling the Intention. Therefore, one must first practice calm abiding. As it is said: Having obtained samadhi, diligently cultivate wisdom. Through wisdom, one obtains pure wisdom. Thus it is said. Also from the Holy Ten Bhumi Sutra: The wisdom of omniscience arises dependent on samadhi. Thus it is said. Also from the Compendium of Trainings: Boundless and unbearable suffering such as existence, etc., you have experienced again and again because your mind and intention are not pacified. Thus it is said. Also from Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior: When the mind is completely distracted, one dwells in the jaws of the kleshas. Thus it is said. Therefore, I shall first accomplish calm abiding. Thus I think. This is the preliminary. How to fix the mind? The image that has been well examined above, at a distance of about one cubit in front of me, is the shape better than the one examined before? Is the color clearer? Thus, fix the mind with great effort on knowing how the complete characteristics appear clearly. As soon as it is fixed like that, even if it does not appear at all, think that it is only complete. Even if a slight difference appears, hold it with great effort. If it does not appear again, think that it has merged into completeness. Therefore, meditate on how clearly it appears as complete, and if it does not appear as complete, even if a slight difference appears, fix it on that. As soon as it appears, fix the mind with great effort on the characteristics of completeness. Therefore, mainly meditate on the general, and while dwelling on the particular, place it on the particular. Others say, what is the need to fix the mind with effort, it is enough to place it in the ordinary. But beginners should not do that.
