. The master Asanga said that entering into samadhi with seven mental activities can be summarized into four: entering with effort, entering with explanation sometimes, entering without explanation sometimes, and entering spontaneously. Therefore, beginners should concentrate their minds and grasp the object of focus. This is the method of how to fix the mind. What is abandoning faults? Faults here refer to sinking and excitement. As before, when fixing the mind, if you find the mind sinking or suspect it is about to sink, you should remember the object that generates faith, and as soon as you become aware, immediately fix the mind as before. The causes of sinking are the difference in food, fatigue, and remembering darkness, etc., so you cannot clearly hold the object. Excitement is when, as before, as soon as you fix the mind, you think of anything other than the object of focus, that is excitement. As soon as you remember, immediately generate renunciation and quickly fix the mind on the object of focus. The cause of excitement mostly comes from attachment, so you should think about impermanence and generate renunciation, so that the mind returns from the object. Because the meditation time is short, sinking is less common, and you should try to avoid excitement. When you want to generate insight from stillness, you should do as described in the "Stages of Meditation". In short, if sinking, make it clear; if excitement, restrain it; if entering into equanimity, relax the mind. In this way, abandon faults. What is grasping the limit of the body? The superior person practices four or five sessions in a quarter of the day and night. A quarter of the night, that is, the first half of the night and the second half of the night, practice four or five sessions. The middle person practices five or six sessions in a quarter of the day. The inferior person practices six or seven sessions in about one-fifth or one-sixth of the day. The reason why the constitution is weak and there are many sessions is because the time is short. The superior person is the time to eat a meal. The middle and inferior persons meditate for the time it takes to walk the distance of one arrow, three arrows, or two arrows with ordinary steps, this is the general practice. All of these should be meditated for a short time, and then add one session each day for ten days, so that you can know which is more comfortable in the morning or afternoon, and the limits of the superior and middle constitutions.

One should also perceive and pacify even the slightest bit of happiness. In this way, one can control the channels. What should one do during rest or when not practicing? One should make the intention complete, the livelihood complete, and the conduct complete. Among these, the complete intention is the intention to diligently subdue oneself, the intention of how to eliminate the faults and fears of others, and the intention to accumulate the resources for tranquility. Among these, the intention to diligently subdue oneself, as the noble Fierce One said: Why have I come to a solitary place? Some who dwell in solitary places are not renunciates or Brahmins, for they are not peaceful, not pure, not concealed, not diligent, not industrious. For example, wild animals, monkeys, many birds, thieves, and outcasts also dwell there in great numbers, but they do not possess the qualities of a renunciate. I dwell in a solitary place, and I should attain the meaning of a renunciate, thus generating the thought. Furthermore, I have come here from a long road, alone and without a second. There is no friend to encourage good deeds or bad deeds. The gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, and Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who know the minds of others, if I dwell in a solitary place and am controlled by an unwholesome mind, I will be controlled by them. I have come from a long road, alone and without a second, I am without fear and without complete attachment. If I am controlled by unwholesome thoughts such as thoughts of desire, thoughts of malice, or thoughts of harm, I will be no different from beings who are in turmoil or who dwell in turmoil. The gods, nagas, yakshas, and gandharvas will also be deceived, and the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, will also be displeased. Therefore, how should I generate the thought so that I will not be ridiculed by the gods and will not displease the Buddhas, the Bhagavat? Do not examine the faults of others, as it is said in the sutra: Those with the light of qualities, dwelling in the forest.
