It possesses the desired characteristics, such as the feeling of non-appearance and the complete appearance in both strong and weak efforts. Furthermore, for some individuals, the manner of the mind's arising is similar to that of the immediate past, and from the third stage of the arising sequence, it appears in both strong and weak efforts. At times, if one meditates on something else, there will be instances of non-appearance. In those instances, five uncertainties will appear: uncertainty of shape, uncertainty of color, color alone, number, and uncertainty of size. Among these, uncertainty of shape refers to wanting the form of the Sugata to appear, but instead of the form appearing, a stupa or other round shapes appear. Uncertainty of color refers to wanting yellow to appear, but instead, blue or red or other colors appear. Color alone refers to wanting both shape and color to appear, but the designation of shape is difficult to apply; yellow or other colors appear as light. Uncertainty of number refers to meditating on one, but two or more appear. Uncertainty of size refers to meditating on something large, but something small appears, and so on. Among these uncertainties, it is possible for two to appear in one session, or three or four to appear in one person, but it is impossible for all five to appear in one session. This is because it contradicts "color alone." Even in "color alone," the color may be the same as or different from the color of the previous form. If everything appears black, it indicates an imbalance in the elements. Why is it called "uncertain"? It is called "uncertain" because none of these are certain during the third stage of the arising sequence. At that time, one should not follow these, but rather meditate on the form that was previously ascertained. Although others may appear similar and clear, they do not possess the desired characteristics, so one should not follow them, as they may oppress the elements. By not following them, it will arise, possessing the desired characteristics such as complete appearance in both strong and weak efforts. Possessing the desired characteristics can also be used as a method of pointing out the uncertainties. Afterwards, one can transform them into whatever one prefers. The measure of the duration of these simultaneous and gradual appearances is four characteristics, and the distinctions in clarity are three: superior, intermediate, and inferior. Among these, the four characteristics are the complete appearance in both strong and weak efforts, and the ability to remain throughout the entire session.

, and being free from agitation and dullness, abandoning bodily comfort, being slightly relaxed, with joy and laughter arising in the mind, and being in accordance with the direction of one-pointedness of mind. The three distinctions of clarity are: the best is clearer and softer than what is seen with the eyes, the medium is felt to be similar to what is seen directly, and the lowest does not fully appear clear. Know that whichever of these arises is acceptable, and for now, this is what is being taught. Later is the increase, making the unclear clear, and methods for making the clear last longer, etc. Some say that there is no need to rely on stable methods, but that is not the case, the stable method is both meditation and rest, therefore it must be measured according to the difference in constitution, which is very important. If you want to know how to understand according to the difference in constitution, if the constitution is superior, and you find a state of mind abiding when there is no discomfort, then for three days and three nights, at dusk and dawn, and when it is clear during the day, or without effort, meditate as much as possible without losing what appeared before. If the mind abides when there is slight discomfort, then for two days and two nights, at dusk and dawn and during the day, meditate as before. If the constitution is medium, and the mind abides when there is no discomfort, then for two days and two nights, meditate as much as possible at dusk and dawn during the day. If the mind abides when there is slight discomfort, then for one day and one night, meditate as before at dusk and dawn during the day. If the constitution is inferior, and the mind abides when there is no discomfort, then meditate as before for one day and one night. If the mind abides when there is slight discomfort, then the duration of the session should be like just starting to learn, and know not to exert too much effort, and meditate both day and night. This is a relaxed practice, and for all three constitutions, whenever the body is tired, or vigor arises, or fear is felt, or the head feels heavy, or it frequently sinks, or as soon as strength arises, interrupt it. For all three constitutions, whenever the constitution is very uncomfortable, and the mind abiding occurs at the same time, then do not meditate at all, but rest. Until the constitution is restored, rather than meditating in divided sessions, look slightly. Thus stabilize.

Recognizing the object established by a stable method is in accordance with attention. As it is said in the Holy Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra: "O Maitreya, what should be done with attention until the body and mind are completely tamed and not yet attained? It is endowed with aspiration in accordance with calm abiding, but it is not calm abiding." Whoever is obscured by the three stains, Like a blind person, does not see the Nirmāṇakāya, This understanding increases from higher to higher, May I see it by striving to see it. A brief description of the method of entering calm abiding is complete. The method of entering calm abiding.
