Do not examine the faults of others. Do not generate thoughts such as, "I am particularly superior, I am the best." Arrogance is the root of all carelessness. Do not despise inferior practitioners. One kalpa will not attain enlightenment. This is the order of this teaching. Thus it is said. The Noble Jewel Cloud Sutra also says: Examining the faults of others, like dwelling in a solitary place, is improper attention. If fears of non-humans (spirits) and the like arise, generate great compassion. The Sutra says that this will pacify them. In general, for the accumulation of calm abiding, one should remember all that has been said above from time to time. If a renunciant's livelihood is abundant, whether it is gradual alms or contented alms, one should first accept it as prescribed in the Vinaya or Sutra, or request it from the patron. Afterwards, even if life is very poor, do not regret it. Think: My life depends on others, abandon pride. Even a seven-day-old gruel mixed with leftovers is acceptable, because the Bhagavan has repeatedly condemned attachment to the taste of food. Relying on food without generating afflictions, this is true abundance of livelihood. If one is a layperson, one should first choose food that is faultless and suitable for one's body. Afterwards, do not generate thoughts of craving, offering, or seeking. Be content and have few desires. If one can accomplish what has not been accomplished by eating only one meal, why should our bodies not be strong even if we eat at all times and in all places, even if we only have leftovers? Therefore, accumulating evil deeds for the sake of food and not hindering virtuous deeds is a completely pure livelihood. Think in this way. Perfect conduct is that, while the mind is not still, do not recite or prostrate too much. The deity you have vowed to practice should also be reduced in quantity. Walk back and forth during the day, and recite along the way, without making too much noise. The body's conduct should be relaxed. Do not walk on steep uphill or downhill paths. Do not stay in one place for too long. Do not sleep during the day with your burden down. Do not increase strength or do vigorous exercise. All conduct is for enlightenment.

One should remember with the mind, as one remembers the arising from the holy Jewel Cloud or from a completely pure realm of conduct. Therefore, one should engage in action and mind for virtue; if one cannot, one should rest with equanimity and non-indication. One should not let go of even a little bit of non-virtuous mind, gathering together and showing off eloquence, or speaking ill of kings and women, etc., or even generating bad thoughts. As mentioned above, go ahead and make whatever aspirations you can. Beginners should do one session of meditation each day, and should not alternate meditation. These are the activities for when not meditating. There are two ways in which the mind arises through meditation: suddenly and gradually. The former has two types: from one session up to seven days, a sudden effort appears to be complete in both strong and weak efforts, and after appearing clearly, it becomes stable; or it appears for only one session and then does not appear for several days, but in any case, it appears to be complete suddenly and then becomes stable. There are four types of gradual: first, no matter how strong or weak the effort, there is no experience of even a little bit of appearance; then, when meditating strongly, it appears, but sometimes there is no experience of either strong or weak; when meditating strongly, it appears, but when meditating at other times, it sometimes does not appear; and the characteristics of appearing completely in both strong and weak efforts, etc., possess the characteristics of wanting to focus. Some also arise in this way: from the very beginning, it is impossible not to appear in both strong and weak efforts, but only a part appears, and it is not desired to appear incompletely. Focus on what is clear, and when it is not clear, focus on relaxation. If one part is clear, focus on that, and if it is not clear, do as before, and if the degree of clarity becomes greater and greater and grows steadily, then it appears completely in both strong and weak efforts, etc., possessing the characteristics of wanting to focus. Also, for some, from the very beginning, there is an experience of sometimes appearing and sometimes not appearing in both strong and weak efforts; after a little growth, it mostly appears in both strong and weak efforts, but there is an experience of not appearing at certain times, and it also appears in both strong and weak efforts, but if the effort is weakened in meditation, at certain times
