There is no need for discriminating wisdom to precede. Those who say that even beginners should not pay attention to anything, their arguments have already been refuted by the learned master Kamalaśīla. He has made it very clear that beginners need discriminating wisdom to precede, just like the sun rising in a clear sky, there is no need for the light of fireflies to illuminate it. Some also say that by relying solely on the statement "because it is devoid of the nature of one and many, therefore it is without nature," and diligently meditating on non-mentation, discriminating thoughts will never cease. The Noble Jewel Cloud Sutra says, "Things will not become manifest merely by hearing and thinking." Therefore, they say that one must discriminate and observe, which is a misunderstanding of the meaning of the sutras. Why is that? Because the sutra says, "Things will not become manifest merely by hearing and thinking, therefore one needs to meditate." Therefore, if one says, "Things will not become manifest merely by hearing and thinking, so one needs to discriminate and observe," this is negating one's own promise with one's own words. The connection is that any contradictory words are negated by one's own words, just like saying, "My mother is a demoness." It is like that. Merely thinking will not make things manifest, therefore one needs to discriminate and observe, this statement is also contradictory, so it is the reason of self-nature. Therefore, that is wrong. When speaking to a superior, one should say, "Merely hearing is not enough, one should contemplate properly." One should say it like this. Just as the master Kamalaśīla also said in the chapter on Vipassanā, "Extensively seek much learning, and contemplate properly." Some say that measuring with wisdom at the time of hearing is thinking, and there is no need to cultivate Śamatha first and then think again. That is not the case. The Noble Sutra on Cultivating Faith in the Great Vehicle says, "Good son, in whatever way Bodhisattvas generate faith in the Great Vehicle, enter the Great Vehicle, all of these are not

It is said that what arises from a distracted mind should be understood as not being a correct consideration of meaning and Dharma. In the first chapter of "Stages of Meditation," it is also said: Therefore, one should grasp with the hand of samadhi, and with the sword of extremely subtle wisdom, remove the thorn of the seed of false conceptualization of forms and so on that exists in the mind. Therefore, just as a tree that has been uprooted will not grow again, because it has no roots, the mind of false conceptualization will also not arise again. It is said that, therefore, the mind at the time of merely hearing is not enough, and it is also necessary to show that samadhi precedes it. Even that is not enough; one must use the wisdom that abides in samadhi to individually examine the meaning of what is heard. As it is said: Here, the superior practice is like meditating on samadhi. And so on, after saying, if one individually observes the selflessness of phenomena, individually examines it, and so on. Therefore, one should rely on calm abiding to generate the wisdom of contemplation. At that time, when one used to strengthen the elements, one should also keep the practice of meditating once in the evening. According to how comfortable one is in one's conduct, one should sit and contemplate for a duration limited by the distance of three, two, or one ordinary paces, depending on whether one's physical strength is good, medium, or poor. The number of sessions should be four times a day for those with good physical strength, five times for those with medium strength, and six times for those with poor strength. The reason for having more sessions with poor strength is that the time is shorter. All three should contemplate once during the day on the first day. Then, add one session each day until reaching the limit of one's own physical strength. During that time, or when contemplating after reaching the limit of one's own sessions, if signs of physical discomfort arise, one should be patient and immediately calm them when not contemplating. If it is during the time of adding sessions and contemplating, do not add sessions until physical discomfort does not arise, and if one feels discomfort when contemplating at one's own limit, reduce the number of sessions and calm it with massage and so on, and then contemplate as before. All three should not contemplate at night at all. Use sleep and rest to strengthen the fatigue of the day. Now, for the time being, using the reasoning that demonstrates the selflessness of persons, how to apply it to what has been heard
