Or, like this, the scriptures mostly explain the refutation of the countless different views of the non-Buddhist schools that cling to the self, which should be understood. However, those will not temporarily harm most practitioners. Then, what will harm? Like this, those who have not heard the Dharma of the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, or even if they have heard a lot but do not follow the Dharma, their ordinary thoughts will think like this: I was born from this father and mother, and I also remember doing this and that kind of karma before. This body of mine has existed in this way since before, so they cling to the four aggregates as the self. For the form aggregate, they cling to it as the self, and think that it is permanent and unique, or they think that it is independent, which should be examined. The combination is that, whether by direct perception or inference, it cannot be determined there. It cannot be found apart from that, those are not seen there, and it is not seen in those. Seeing it connected to those is also not in the conventional, like not finding butter even when searching for it in five ways. This thought of thinking "I" is also not determined by searching in the aggregates, sense bases, and elements with five ways such as "Is it that?" by direct perception and inference, so in reality, it is not possible to determine the pervasiveness. Because for the expression of existence, it is pervaded by the objects of the two consciousnesses. Therefore, think a little, "Is there a self apart from the aggregates?" Then think like this: For the time being, it is not seen by direct perception, even if I open my eyes wide, I do not see anything that can be the self. It is also not seen by inference, because there is no sign. Thus, since it is not seen elsewhere, and the thought arises that "the aggregates are the self," one should examine it a little, just as the ordinary thoughts of ordinary people arose before. Then think like this: What is this consciousness that clings to the aggregates as a permanent and unique self? Does it cling by direct perception, or will it cling by inference? To that, for the time being, direct perception does not see uniqueness in the body, from the feet up to the head down, the eyes are very

Even when analyzed, not a trace of indivisible oneness is found. Even when touched by hand, not a trace of indivisible oneness can be found. Constancy is not seen, as even in an instant, there appear different things such as going, staying, having, rising, sitting, lying, stretching, contracting, heat, cold, wetness, and dryness. By inference, oneness is not seen either. Why? In short, the form aggregate has fifteen, the feeling aggregate has three, the perception aggregate has three, the mental formation aggregate has forty-nine mental factors and fourteen non-associated formations, and the consciousness aggregate has eight. Some of these are seen directly, some are said in trustworthy teachings, and some are known through inference based on karma. Therefore, since multiplicity is recognized, there is no oneness. Constancy is also not seen, because whatever is compounded by causes and conditions is impermanent. For example, a dance performance. This aggregate is also compounded by causes and conditions, so it is impermanent, because the contradictory pervasion is observed. Therefore, through direct perception and inference, this aggregate is seen as neither constant nor one. Then, is it thought that the self is the aggregate? That is impossible, because the basis is not established. Then, is it thought that the self exists in the aggregate? That is also not possible. Because whatever is not seen to exist in something cannot be said to exist in it. For example, since a horse is not seen to have horns, it cannot be said to have horns. Similarly, since the self of two kinds of consciousness is not seen in this aggregate, it cannot be said to exist. Then, is it thought that the self is connected to the aggregate? That is also incorrect. Because whatever does not have its own nature established does not have the quality of being connected. For example, the son of a barren woman does not have qualities such as beautiful appearance. Similarly, the permanent self that is insisted upon, since it does not have its own nature established, does not have the quality of being connected, because the pervasive is not observed. What exists in conventional truth can be observed through direct perception and inference. Therefore, the reversal from the dissimilar side is established. The five are not found, entering into harmony, not harmonious.
