Well said! This is called the concluding verse. Now, some might think that if one establishes the absence of inherent existence in the ultimate sense, then the appearance of mind itself cannot be established either, because this is a common proof. However, if one does not even establish that it does not exist elsewhere in the conventional sense, that is unreasonable. For example, whatever is not established will not appear, such as flowers in the sky, the son of a barren woman, and the horns of a rabbit; the manifesting eye consciousness will not arise. To think that something meaningless will still appear would lead to the fault of non-appearance. If one thinks this is because pervasiveness does not exist, that is unreasonable. For example, whatever is seen as different will not exist as one, such as a motley color. Even for one woman, vultures and so on, a lecherous man, and a yogi see differently, therefore the essence will not exist as one, because the contradictory pervasiveness exists. Because things are not elsewhere, therefore attachment to them does not exist either. As it is said in the *Lankavatara Sutra*: Meaning is not existent, it is mind-consciousness, seeing external objects is inverted. Those who discriminate with reason will cut off the grasped and the grasper. Thus it is said. If the ultimate absence of inherent existence is established, then mind is also absent because of one reason. If it is not established in the conventional sense either, it should not be like the horns of a rabbit, etc., not appearing. If you think that there will be a consequence of non-existence, it is unreasonable because one thing has many differences. There is no object to be grasped elsewhere, therefore there is no grasper. Thus the Sugata declared. This is called the concluding verse. If one thinks in this way, the root of the three realms is only mind, and its aspect is appearing as objects, because it is the field of activity, so connect them appropriately. As Aryadeva said: The root of existence is mind itself, the objects are the field of activity of that mind. Thus it is said. It itself arises dependently, therefore it exists in the ultimate sense. As it is said in the *Lankavatara Sutra*: Observed things are not truly existent, other-powered is existent, imputation and defamation, the final discrimination will perish. If one thinks in this way, that is unreasonable. For example, this body that is to be established...

It should be examined. The teacher Dignāga said: "In the nature of one's own mere form, after viewing all knowable things, with the vajra of suchness wisdom, utterly destroy the illusion wheel of the body." Thus he said. Therefore, if this body exists in a ultimate way, does it exist in the nature of indivisibility? Or does it exist with parts or as atoms? Regarding this, for the moment, according to the first view, if this finger is an indivisible thing, then does it exist outside the joints? Or is it connected to the joints? Because it becomes an object of cognition as in the former case. It will become separate as a pot and a cloth. Therefore, since it cannot be observed separately, it does not exist, its nature is invisible. It is also unreasonable because of connection, because each of the three joints will become a complete finger. Even so, because it is indivisible, if one joint is obscured, then all the fingers will be obscured, or if one turns red, then all will turn red. However, if one joint is covered by one direction, because it has parts, then the oneness will be lost. Therefore, since it is not outside, it is also impossible to think that it is connected to the joints. Because it is no different from thinking that the finger is one. Like the nature of the finger itself, the three joints will become one. The finger is also no different from the three joints, just as there are three joints, thinking of it as one will also become many. Because it is not outside, and there is no aspect of connection or relation, therefore, the aspect of indivisibility is not established, so it does not exist. However, if according to the second view, the gross exists in parts or aggregates, that is also unreasonable. Thus, the first joint and so on, because it cannot be said that it is neither other nor non-other from its own parts, it is not established, so it does not exist. Therefore, the gross existing in parts is also not established. Similarly, form and so on should also be understood as non-existent, because their nature is only aggregation, and aggregation has also been shown to be without substance. Then, if according to the third view, it exists in the nature of atoms, that is also unreasonable. Thus, atoms also have parts.

Because they are different, they cannot be established as one, because the contradiction of self-nature is seen. If it is thought that because there are those different parts, it is impossible to be many, then, if a partless atom cannot be established, then many partless atoms cannot be established, because it is their collection. After such certainty, holding a little bit of knowledge is established through inference by reasoning. After that, these phenomena such as the body, because they are free from one and many in the ultimate sense, therefore they have no self-nature in the ultimate sense. For example, just like an image, the arising of the knowledge that there is nothing to cling to even to one is the knowledge of inference. As it is said, in the Sutra Requested by the Holy Kinnara King Tree: 'Like an image appearing in a mirror, both one and other are abandoned, although it appears, it is not really there, so is the self-nature of all things.' Thus it is said. If it is thought that mind and mental factors are partless and exist in the ultimate sense, that is unreasonable, because like eye consciousness and so on, there is no difference from many aspects. The self-nature of the aspect, its essence itself is both many and one. If it is thought to exist as many, that is also unreasonable. As it is said: 'No matter what things are examined, there is no one in them, where there is no one thing, there is also no many things.' Thus it is said. Therefore, if these that appear as objects have no self-nature, then how can mind exist? Because there is no difference. As it is said, Arya Deva also said: 'After seeing no-self in objects, cut off the root of existence, the mind.' Thus it is said. It is also said: 'There is no existence apart from aggregates, non-separation is also non-existent, thus there are no established limbs and so on, therefore it is only a collection. Those who are united with that collection, the fingers and other senses show that all things are non-existent, there is no extremely small particle apart from the collection. Thus, where should the consciousness that understands one meaning be examined? How can the mental events, the collection, and the mind's one object be formed here?' Thus it is said. Because it is dependent arising, the thought that it exists in the ultimate sense is also within the scope of conventional truth, because it is the reasoning of self-nature. If existence is established in the ultimate sense, then
