Because the perception is pervaded by contradiction. Otherwise, illusions and the like would also be truly existent. Therefore, the noble Nagarjuna said: 'When what arises from the condition of ignorance is analyzed by correct knowledge, whether it is arising or ceasing, nothing becomes an object of perception.' Thus he spoke. 'The power of others exists,' and so forth, that statement was also spoken with the conventional truth in mind. The Sutra itself says: 'When analyzed by the mind, there is no other's power, and there is no analysis. If established things are existent or nonexistent, how can the mind analyze?' Thus it is said. How much is it contemplated? When the proof is established and the knowledge of inference arises, it does not go beyond the meaning of what is realized. Since the mind does not find a place to examine, something arises that stays on its own. Contemplate just that much. After that arises, the thought arises that a mind that does not abide in anything arises. Therefore, with an undistracted mind, ponder the selflessness of persons and phenomena as it has been said, reach the limit, and then rest for a while. What summarizes these, how they appear, refuting wrong ideas about them, examining the body, and showing the measure. This is the verse of summary. Now, it is the reason for generating the wisdom of meditation. Think like this: The wisdom of thinking, the proof of being separated from one and many is definitely established, and after remembering the connection, even if the wisdom of definitely examining all the elaborations of superimposition on things and non-things is firmly generated, if it is not familiarized with the wisdom of meditation, then it is impossible to generate the non-conceptual wisdom that directly sees all phenomena as the center of the sky. For example, just as if a place for a horse race is pointed out and preparations are made without obstacles, but if it is not run, there is no time to reach the end of the course. Think like that. As it is said, in the Noble Tree Array Sutra, it is said: 'For example, some of the king's people, although they count many treasures, do not get even half of the wealth. The Dharma that has not been meditated on is the same.' Thus it is said. Noble Samadhi

Also, in the Samadhiraja Sutra, it says: For example, a person is sick and suffering, and sometimes cannot be freed for many years. This is because he is tormented by the suffering of illness, and seeks a doctor to cure the disease. Again and again he seeks, and finds a doctor who is skilled and wise. The doctor also approaches him with compassion, giving him the instruction: "Take this medicine." Having found many beneficial and good medicines, he does not take the medicine that will cure the disease. The doctor is not at fault, nor is the medicine at fault, it is the patient's own fault. Similarly, having become ordained in this teaching, understanding all the powers, samadhi, and faculties, one does not diligently practice meditation. If one does not diligently practice, how can one attain nirvana? So it is said. Some say that meditation is simply becoming accustomed to something, and has no other meaning. Therefore, it is said that by becoming accustomed to the wisdom of separate thought, the wisdom of non-discrimination can arise. But this is unreasonable. In the Sutra of Scattered Words, it says: Just as the hands and feet are busy running, running on a dangerous road, if one mainly clings to inference, it is difficult not to fall. So it is said. Therefore, even in the first stage of meditation, one should do so, and through the wisdom of thought, analyze the correct meaning in detail, and in order to make it manifest, generate the wisdom of meditation. The meaning will not become manifest merely through hearing, etc., as it is taught in the Holy Manjushri Cloud Sutra, etc. So it is said. In the Holy Manjushri Cloud Sutra, it says: The Bodhisattva prays by eliminating all obstacles: O Blessed One, is it not self-realization for a son of good family to understand the Dharma through the wisdom arising from hearing or thinking? The Blessed One replied: Son of good family, it is not. Merely through hearing or thinking, one cannot self-realize the Dharma. Son of good family, therefore listen to an example. Son of good family, for example, in a vast rural monastery, in the last month of summer, one person goes from east to west, and then another person comes from west to east, and that is also summer.
