The refutation from aspects is established. By entering into agreement, the example is established. There are no faults in the reason and the example. This is called the concluding verse. Because it appears as impermanent and multiple, it is not refuted by direct perception. Because there is no established permanence and oneness, it is also not refuted by inference. Because it is not asserted to be permanent and one, there is no contradiction with one's own statement. Because it refers to the impermanent continuum, it is also not refuted by scripture. Do not be attached to misinterpreted scriptures. Because permanence and oneness are without number, it is also not refuted by common knowledge. This is an intermediate verse. How much should one contemplate? When one is certain that this aggregate has many parts, numerous parts, is loose and hollow, and is impermanent, then the perception of permanence and wholeness will not arise. Instead, the certainty of having no essence or self, not being one, being an aggregation of many, having the nature of disintegration, and having a continuum will arise. By the power of this, some may feel aversion and displeasure, while others may feel joy, thinking that the sacred Dharma is rare and wonderful. And the knowledge that grasps permanence and oneness is definitely mistaken, because the thought arises that there is no certainty of self or sentient beings being permanent and one. Contemplate in this way. As it is said in the noble *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra*: 'Here there is no self or sentient being. This Dharma arises from causes and conditions.' So it is said. Furthermore, some say that the person is not established as permanent or one, as mentioned above. Nor is it established as impermanent and multiple, because one's own statement has clarified it. If someone says that there is a person who cannot be described as either, then one might wonder if such a thing could exist. It cannot, because it cannot be described as permanent, therefore it is separate from one. It cannot be described as impermanent, therefore it is separate from many. As it is said in the *Ornament of the Middle Way*: 'Because the person cannot be described as permanent or impermanent, etc., it is clearly understood by wisdom that it is separate from the nature of one and many.' So it is said. Now, one should contemplate the selflessness of phenomena. For the time being, think like this: If it is certain that the examination of what is called a person as permanent and one does not exist even conventionally, then the aggregates, sense bases, and elements, which arise from causes and conditions and have the characteristics of impermanence and multiplicity,

What includes these? How do they appear? Do they exist in the ultimate sense? Or should one think that they are not established as existing? What includes them? Two things: form and non-form. Of these, form includes the aggregate of form, the twelve sources, and the ten elements. Non-form includes the four aggregates and one part of the aggregate of form, the two sources, and the eight elements. Of these, the aggregates, sources, and elements, the physical body and empty houses, non-empty houses, mountains, forests, oceans, rivers, springs, and so on, which appear to children as if they were cut off in the external world, do they exist in the same way, separate from the mind? Or, from beginningless time, does the very nature of the mind appear due to the power of attachment to form and other unreal things? For example, in the state of a dream, one should think that it is like the appearance of the body, the earth, empty houses, and so on. Furthermore, these bodies and so on are broken down into atoms, and when the atoms are examined separately as to the nature of their parts, they have no nature because they cannot be definitively grasped. For example, one should think that it is like the absence of a person because it is separate from one and many. As it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: "Great wisdom, even the horn of a bull cannot be found when broken down into atoms. And when the atoms are broken down separately, they do not abide in the nature of atoms." Again it says: "External forms do not exist, one's own mind appears as external." Thus, to think that form and so on truly exist elsewhere is to follow after wrong conceptions, because there is no reasoning to establish it, and there are many valid cognitions that harm existence, and the scriptures also show that it does not exist, so it is certain that the mind itself appears. As it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra itself: "Things are broken down into dust, do not discriminate form. The establishment of sentient beings is not understood by those with evil views." As the body and so on are not established even as dust, they do not exist, just like the self of a person. It is established by scripture, and because it is a wrong conception, there is no reason to establish it.
