That person, completely tormented by the heat of the sun and threatened by thirst, spoke to the person coming from the east, saying: "Hey, sir, if you are completely tormented by the heat of summer and threatened by thirst, where is there a lake, pond, or pool, where is there cool water, and where is it clear and free of mud? Where can I completely quell the heat and thirst, please show me the way." The person coming from the east is someone who knows the road, is skilled in the road, sees the road, and sees the signs of the road. He has seen water free from the faults of water before, has tasted it before, and has entered it before. He said to that person: "Hey, friend, go from this road to the intersection where you can see the rock. Hey, sir, abandon the left path and enter the green forest from the right path, and in the middle of that forest, go to where you can see a lake, pond, or pool, where there is cool water, clear and transparent, free of mud, and there, sir, you will eliminate thirst and heat." Son of good family, what do you think? That person, tormented by the heat of summer and threatened by thirst, as soon as he hears of water, or merely thinks of water, will he be able to eliminate the heat? Will he be able to get rid of thirst? Will he be able to personally feel the coolness of the water? He replied: "Venerable One, no. Venerable One, when that person arrives there and enters that water to bathe, at that time that person's heat will disappear. He will be able to get rid of thirst. He will be able to personally feel the coolness of that water." The Venerable One said: "Likewise, son of good family, merely by hearing and thinking, one cannot comprehend the Dharma that is realized by oneself." Furthermore, son of good family, the word "wilderness" is a euphemism for the wilderness of samsara. The phrase "a person completely tormented by the heat of summer and threatened by thirst" is a euphemism for sentient beings completely tormented by the suffering of afflictions and threatened by the thirst of desire. The phrase "one who knows the road" is a euphemism for Bodhisattvas, all-knowing ones, skilled in the road, experiencing the Dharma, and personally realizing the Dharma. The phrase "water that is clear and transparent, free of mud" is a euphemism for the ultimate nature of Dharma.

So! Again, son of good family, listen to an example. Son of good family, what do you think? If the Thus-Gone One were to remain for a kalpa, praising the nectar of the gods before the people of Jambudvipa, saying that it is fragrant, pure, abundant, extremely delicious, and pleasant to the touch, son of good family, what do you think? Would those sentient beings know that nectar through their own praise? They replied, "No, Blessed One." The Blessed One said, "Son of good family, therefore, you should know that you cannot comprehend the Dharma that is known by oneself merely by hearing or thinking about this category. Son of good family, listen to another example. Son of good family, for example, if someone were to taste a fruit that no sentient being had ever tasted before, and then praise that fruit before another person, saying that its color is perfect, its taste is perfect, and its fragrance is fragrant, son of good family, what do you think? Would that person know the taste of that fruit for himself?" They replied, "No, Blessed One." The Blessed One said, "Son of good family, therefore, you should know that you cannot comprehend the Dharma that is known by each individual merely by hearing or thinking about this category." Thus he spoke. Before meditating, there is no transformation, and there is a distorted thought about it, and the refutation of it is shown, and it is explained in detail by scripture. This is called the summary verse. Among them, the limbs of the accumulation of merit are: the three aggregates, or the seven limbs, or the ten practices of Dharma, or the thirteen practices of Dharma, or the twenty practices of Dharma. As it is said in the Compendium of Trainings: These are the cause of the accumulation of merit. Therefore, as mentioned above, when a yogi who is well-established in the accumulation of discipline and so forth, in calm abiding and special insight, meditates, he should first completely accomplish all that needs to be done, and then in a place without the thorns of sound, a place that is agreeable to the mind, such as a mountain cave, a hut at the base of a tree, or a house, he should do as much as he can to sweep, wash, and offer mandalas.
