He respects and acts as a guru, and the Shravaka laypeople and renunciants will also follow him, arousing attachment to those who come later, and striving to gather more people. He thinks to himself: 'Those of my Shravaka laypeople and renunciants who believe that I am a famous Arhat will come and ask me questions about yoga, attention, Shamatha and Vipassana. If I answer them by saying, "I do not know," then my reputation as an Arhat will be damaged. Therefore, I must think for myself and carefully analyze for others in order to establish the practice of yoga.' Because he is attached to gain and respect, and is controlled by these things, he goes alone to a secluded place, thinks for himself, and carefully analyzes for others in order to establish the practice of yoga. His yoga does not conform to the Sutras, nor does it appear correctly in the Vinaya, and it is contrary to the Dharma. He also conceals the practice of yoga from those Bhikshus who uphold the Sutras, uphold the Vinaya, and uphold the Matrikas, and does not reveal it. He also instructs those Shravaka laypeople and renunciants to keep the practice of yoga secret. Why? Because if those who uphold the Sutras, uphold the Vinaya, and uphold the Matrikas hear about the practice of yoga, if it conforms to the Sutras, then it does not conform; if it appears correctly in the Vinaya, then it does not appear correctly; if it approaches the Dharma, then it will contradict the Dharma. Therefore, they will not be pleased, and will rebuke me with displeasing words, and disputes will arise. If that happens, then the kings, great ministers, wealthy people, and merchants will not respect me, will not regard me as a guru, and I will not be able to obtain robes, alms, bedding, cushions, medicine, and other necessities. Because he thinks that these things are not good, he does this.

Therefore, due to being controlled by the desire for gain and respect, even while being aware that something is not Dharma, they still perceive it as such, and by reversing their desires, they teach and accurately present non-Dharma through the gateway of Dharma. Those who act in accordance with their views are perceiving non-Dharma as Dharma. Because they are inferior and ignorant, they perceive non-Dharma as Dharma. Even if they practice as instructed, it should be understood that it is only wrong practice. Such deterioration of yoga due to wrong practice is a fabrication like pure Dharma for the purpose of destroying the sacred Dharma, but it is not the sacred Dharma. Therefore, those four deteriorations of yoga should be fully known and completely abandoned by a contemplative bhikshu practicing yoga. Thus it was said. Therefore, the words of the wise that reveal emptiness, like a lamp, are the best of all words, because they are very precious to hear. Similarly, in the Dharma Going Everywhere it is said: The words of the Bodhisattva Akashagarbha that comprehend emptiness are the best of all. In the Ornament of the Middle Way it is said: If the words are not understood, there is no other way to understand it. If it is said in the sutras: Purity of words does not attain enlightenment; one is not pleased with diligence as the essence; and I do not primarily hold to words, then these words are spoken to refute those who cling only to words and do not think and meditate. It is not said in all the sutras that words should not be heard, because this teaching teaches the Dharma through the gateway of sound. Therefore, it is like losing gold in the dark, and there is a large pile of fire burning on the top of a tree nearby. Although the suchness of all dharmas, like gold, exists in one's own body, because it is not understood, the words of the wise that reveal suchness, like a fire burning on the top of a tree, exist in countless lands since the beginning of time. With great reverence, placing the perception of the teacher, the Sugata, even
