Thus it should be heard. What is the sutra of definitive meaning? What is the sutra of interpretable meaning? As in the "Noble King of Samadhi Sutra," the Sugata taught emptiness, know the distinctions of the sutras of definitive meaning. Wherever beings are shown as persons, know that all those teachings are of interpretable meaning. Thus it is said. In that very sutra, speaking from the perspective of the sutra of definitive meaning: When this world comes into being, and all worlds turn into space, just as before, so it will be later, know that all phenomena are thus. Whatever exists in this world, this mass of water flows downward. As it is below, so it is above, know that all phenomena are thus. Just as in the sky, a little without clouds, in an instant a circle of clouds appears, know from where it first arose, thus know all phenomena. After the Tathagata passes into nirvana, just as one imagines, an image appears, just as before, so it will be later, know that all phenomena are thus. Just as many bubbles are stirred up, carried away by the water, a person can clearly see them, but if one examines them, no essence appears, know that all phenomena are thus. Just as when large raindrops fall, bubbles of water separate, arise, and then perish, there are no bubbles of water, know that all phenomena are thus. Just as when a letter is sent to another village, good and non-good deeds are separated, but the sound does not transform into the letter, know that all phenomena are thus. Just as impure people, intoxicated by alcohol, think that this earth is spinning around, but this earth does not move or shake, know that all phenomena are thus. From the surface of a mirror and vessels of sesame oil, when a woman looks at her face adorned, a child develops attachment to it, and runs to seek desire, but the face does not transfer there, and one never finds another in the reflection, just as those fools develop attachment, know that all phenomena are thus.

Know this. Like a mirage and a city of gandharvas, Like an illusion and like a dream, Meditating on characteristics, empty of essence, Know all phenomena in that way. Like the moon rising in the clear sky, Its reflection appearing in the clear lake, The moon does not move into the water, Know the nature of all phenomena in that way. Like people dwelling in the midst of forests and mountains, Singing, speaking, laughing, and playing, Though hearing echoes, they have no attachment, Know all phenomena in that way. Songs and music are also like that, Depending on them, echoes arise, But in the sound, there is never any melody, Know all phenomena in that way. Like enjoying desires in a dream, The person who awakens does not see them, Children are very attached and cling to desires, Know all phenomena in that way. Magicians conjure up forms, Horses, elephants, chariots, and various things, But in them, there is no appearance whatsoever, Know all phenomena in that way. Like a young girl in a dream, Sees a son born and then sees him die, Happy if he is born, unhappy if he dies, Know all phenomena in that way. Like the moon in the water at night, Appearing in clear and unpolluted water, From where does it first come, and where does it go? Know all phenomena in that way. Thus it is said. Ultimately, like the sky, and conventionally, like the moon in water, this is the definitive meaning. If it is appropriate for the Tathagata to speak to those who do not understand this, then what is the need to speak of the provisional meaning? It is not so. The Tathagata does not speak even a little of what is necessary and unnecessary. The need for this is to reverse the thoughts of some sentient beings who say: Seek happiness in life before dying. After death, there is no place for it. The body also disappears like ashes. Where is there another rebirth? To reverse their thoughts, it is said that there are sentient beings who are born miraculously, referring to the sentient beings in the intermediate state. Thus, in order to encourage some lazy people to strive for virtue, it is said that there is a self, referring to the continuum of aggregates.
