It is said that relying on the holy and seeking extensive learning, and so on. Some say that one should only listen, and ethics should be put aside. Why is that? Because the human body can be obtained even by fasting alone. It is meaningless for monks and others to strive for the sake of ethics. If that is the case, then the basis of all worldly and transcendental qualities is ethics, as stated in all the sutras. The root of that is the monk. If that is meaningless, it should be abandoned. If that is abandoned, the root is cut off, so all seven types of individual liberation are abandoned. Therefore, all happy migrations are abandoned. Having abandoned that, since there is no basis for accomplishing enlightenment, how can one accomplish enlightenment? Therefore, those who speak in that way abandon all heavens and liberation. However, the vows of fasting have not been abandoned. If you say that, that will not happen without monks, and it is not enough to just obtain a human body. Here, some are born into the human realm by the karma that propels them, but because the karma that completes them is weak, they cannot enter the Dharma. How can such a human body accomplish enlightenment? Therefore, in order to generate excellent happy migrations, excellent ethics must be protected like life. Otherwise, one cannot be liberated from conditioned things, and one will be utterly destroyed by sickness, old age, and death. It is said in the Noble King of Samadhi Sutra: If a person is greatly harassed by many thieves, and wants to live, so he flees and looks for a way to go, but his feet cannot walk or run, just as the thieves seize and destroy him. Similarly, a foolish person whose ethics are corrupted, although he wants to escape from conditioned things, because his ethics are corrupted, he cannot escape, and he will be utterly destroyed by sickness, old age, and death. It is said. However, if those with little wisdom and no learning have their ethics corrupted, they will be born in a bad migration. If those with great wisdom and much learning have their ethics corrupted, will they not go to a bad migration? That is true, if the wise confess their downfalls and restrain themselves, they will not fall into a bad migration. It is said that even a small iron mountain can go to the bottom of the ocean.

Just as something placed in a container floats on top. Similarly, an unwise person, even if they commit a small misdeed, will fall into a lower realm. A wise person, even if they commit a great misdeed, will not fall. Thus it is said. Therefore, just as with something placed in a container, if one confesses and restrains oneself, one will not fall, and it is not enough to merely hear and know. Thus it is said. In the Noble King of Samadhi Sutra, it is also said: Even if one has mastered many categories of Dharma, if one is filled with hearing but does not guard one's discipline, then due to the deterioration of discipline, one will fall into a lower realm, and for such a person, much hearing cannot save them. Thus it is said. So, if one has heard much and one's discipline is pure, will one not fall due to afflictions such as arguing for views? It is not so. In the Noble Supreme Samadhi Sutra, the Blessed One said to Ananda: I recall that in a past life, I was a being who had heard much, and at that time I argued with Manjushri about the two views of "existence" and "non-existence." Manjushri said "existence," and I said "non-existence." We argued about the two views of "existence" and "non-existence," and we were attached to our own views, and ultimately, after death, we fell into the three lower realms, and for countless eons we ate molten iron. Thus it is said. In the same sutra, it is also said: A person who has heard much has a great sense of pride, like a mountain or an ocean. In this way, if one's pride is strong, one will experience suffering in the lower realms for countless eons. If one is liberated from that hell and is reborn as a bird, then what is the benefit of having heard much? Thus it is said. Therefore, abiding in pure discipline and possessing the patience to endure suffering, one should strive to hear for the benefit of oneself and others, and one should not argue due to the cause of afflictions. Thus it is said. In the Noble King of Samadhi Sutra, it is said: Guard your discipline, but do not be proud of it. Listen to the Dharma, but do not be proud of it. If someone is proud of their small wisdom, then their suffering will increase from that root. Thus it is said. So, what should one hear? One should hear the sutras of definitive meaning that explain the unborn nature of all phenomena, and the reasoning that establishes this meaning.
