That is the meaning of what must be done. Whenever it is said that "all dharmas are contemplated as emptiness," it indicates that it is not intended to cut off a portion of elaboration. When it is said that "free from sinking and excitement, etc.," it means that not only should one be free from those with a greater component of shamatha, but also those with a greater component of vipashyana, as well as unpleasant and unspecified wisdom. When it is said that "at the time when wisdom arises without manifest effort," it means that "even without effort, it naturally abides." The path of yoking together shamatha and vipashyana is complete. When it is said that "even if both are small, it is considered that they can be established because they are equally yoked together," it means that for the time being, one should not make effort at that time. When it is said that "at that time, as much as possible, with the power of aspiration, one should meditate by abiding on the ground of aspiration," it means that the noble ones have not yet directly realized the nature of all dharmas, but rely on reasoning to generate certainty about the hidden meaning, and because it is aspiration on the ground of ordinary beings, one should become accustomed to it. This shows that even on the ground of ordinary beings, there is meditation on non-discrimination through aspiration. If it is not like that, then gradually meditating, after generating non-discriminating wisdom, one would again fall into the fault of meditating through aspiration. Then, it would become twelve kinds of stages. When it is said, "In the stage of heat and peak, abandon the external apprehended object; in the stage of forbearance and the supreme mundane dharma, abandon the internally grasping mind," etc., how should that be understood? Although it is true, however, even if one meditates on the nature of all dharmas as merely being free from all characteristics, it is still connected with the coarse and subtle conceptualizations that should be abandoned. It is said with that in mind. Then, if one gradually meditates on the nature of dharma, then it is reasonable to gradually connect, but if one meditates all at once, then it is unreasonable for the dharma that is to be abandoned to gradually separate, it is reasonable to abandon it all at once, if one says so.

Afflictions are also a kind that needs to be abandoned simultaneously. This is like dirt on clothes, which is roughly removed. Therefore, if it is said that it cannot be abandoned simultaneously, that is indeed the case. Then, in the Dharani for entering non-conceptualization, the signs of discriminating self-nature, discriminating antidotes, discriminating that very nature, and discriminating attainment, are said to be abandoned in four stages, is that so? That is also after shamatha is accomplished, with the discriminating wisdom of reflective intelligence, examining until faith arises. It is said that one should meditate without conceptualizing that meaning. In that very (Dharani), the complete abandonment of all signs is a true union. In the context of the seven condensed meanings, after shamatha is accomplished, one individually examines the sign of discriminating self-nature, and then when abandoning it, among a hundred yogis, if discriminations such as "I should do this" arise, one should also individually examine them. That is what is said. If faith arises in discriminating self-nature, even if faith arises in all four, it is said that one should meditate from then on. If faith does not arise, then the discrimination of attainment should also be abandoned with the wisdom of individual examination. Therefore, this is abandoned by ordinary beings. In that (Dharani), the practice of discriminating the signs of earth and so on is only for yogis who are beginners. It is not for those who have entered the ground, because it is impossible for them. That is what is said. After that, with reflective intelligence, without accomplishing all four signs, one makes the mind dwell on the meaning of faith and meditates. After that, the yogi, by the power of faith and wisdom, abandons all the nets of signs of discriminating existence and so on, and generates faith in the suchness of the mind, which is non-conceptual, free from elaboration, inexpressible, and of one taste, without intentionally manifesting, but meditating and abiding very clearly. That is what is said. This means that an ordinary being abides in samadhi, individually examines with reflective intelligence, abandons the net of discrimination of all signs, and meditates and abides without discriminating anything, through the door of faith. This is what is taught. It is to meditate by cutting off a part of elaboration.
