Having attained that ground and abiding therein, having abandoned the aspects of the mind, those dharmas that are contemplated, within that very state, one individually cognizes the objects of meditative absorption as images. One develops faith in them. Thus, with respect to those images that are the objects of meditative absorption, the act of distinguishing the meaning of what is to be known, as well as thoroughly distinguishing, completely understanding, completely examining, enduring, desiring, differentiating, and whatever constitutes view and thought, is called insight (vipashyana). Thus, a bodhisattva is said to be skilled in insight. So it is said. In the commentary on the Dharani of Entering into Non-Conceptualization, in the section on the seventh condensed meaning, it also states that, as it was taught there, having placed the mind on the appearance of signs, pacifying sinking and agitation, and so forth, in order to accomplish calm abiding, by not attending to the characteristic of truly discriminating, one completely abandons those signs. There also, one should examine individually in the manner of ascertaining the meaning of what has been heard and contemplated. One should meditate on dependent origination, or examine individually the absence of coming and going, or investigate that it does not arise from self, other, or both, or examine the parts individually. In short, however one contemplates, one should examine in such a way that certainty arises about the absence of entity. So it is said. The absence of entity is the absence of dharma, referring to the realm of dharma. So it is said in that very text. Not discriminating, not distinguishing, not seeking, not changing, not wavering, and individually cognizing as it is, or merely cognizing, this is called the first insight, namely, individual cognition. As it is said, this comes from the Sutra of the Teaching of the Noble Accumulation of All Dharmas Without Object and Without Mind. The Blessed One said: Manjushri, what dharma's technical term is 'truly discriminating'? Manjushri replied: Blessed One, what is called 'truly discriminating' is the individual cognition, which does not differentiate or unify any dharma. Blessed One, without change is non-conceptualization. Blessed One, what is called 'truly discriminating' is the technical term for the absence of true discrimination.

The Bhagavan, relying on truly distinguishing, does not think, 'I am an ordinary being' or 'I am a noble hearer.' Why is that? Because the dharma that makes one an ordinary being or a noble one is not truly seen. The Bhagavan, again relying on truly distinguishing, a son or daughter of good family appears in such a way through the manner of the realm of dharma, that they do not make anything equal or unequal in any dharma. They do not think, 'The dharma of ordinary beings is unequal.' They do not discriminate, 'The dharma of noble ones is equal.' Why is that? Because they do not perceive the object that makes things equal or unequal. That which makes things equal or unequal is also not present in that monk. A monk who does not discriminate in this way also does not have the grasping that 'I do not discriminate.' Thus it is said. In the commentary on the Dharani of Non-Discrimination, in the section on the eighth condensed meaning, it is taught that through the power of meditating on the true meaning, the aspect of realizing that all dharmas are without essence arises, and when the realization that self-awareness and self are also without essence arises, the wisdom of the yogi sees it. Thus it is said. In the commentary on the Questions of the Noble Kashyapa, it is said that truly distinguishing as it is, is distinguishing as it exists. Therefore, the reason for the entry of sound is twofold, and that statement is established. However, in the Twenty Thousand Lights, it is like a bird that does not see the edge. How should that be interpreted? That is, just as it returns after not seeing the edge and now stays somewhere, it is not that after distinguishing and not seeing, it is said to distinguish again. If it were so, it would become an act of going back again, and it should not be said to stay somewhere now. Therefore, it is said like this: for example, just as that bird, having looked at the edge of the ocean and not seeing it, stays because there is nowhere to go, so the wisdom of thought, having examined with the wisdom of distinguishing and not seeing, with samadhi as a companion, the consciousness that remains unwavering from it is staying, thus it is said.
